Marc by Sofia premieres in Canada

April 10, 2026

Earlier this month, TIFF Lightbox presented a new documentary, Marc by Sofia,” about the renowned designer Marc Jacobs. Directed by his friend Sofia Coppola, this is the first documentary by the accomplished director.

Marc and Sofia have been friends since the early 1990s, when the future director worked as a photographer and model in New York City, and Jacobs was working for Perry Ellis. The film features many archival clippings from those years, creating a sentimental atmosphere.

Overall, however, the film is nothing nostalgic. On the contrary, it follows the designer as he prepares his 2024 spring collection. From his cinematic references and sources of inspiration to the execution of tiny details (such as the weight of fabrics or the clumpiness of a model’s lashes for the runway), the documentary offers an intimate look at his creative process.

The designer reflects on his grandmother, who was his first fashion muse, his early fashion shows at Parsons School of Design, where he was named Design Student of the Year in the 1980s, and his iconic artistic collaborations during his tenure as creative director of Louis Vuitton.

The friendship between the director and her subject adds intimacy to the movie. Jacobs shares his feelings and emotions with her, as well as addresses popular myths about himself that he has come to embrace.

“Marc by Sofia” is a definite must-watch for anyone interested in fashion, art and creativity.
