A state of elevation with Illuminate Film Festival 2025

June 2, 2025

Santa Barbara lit up this May with the return of the Illuminate Film Festival, a unique celebration of conscious cinema dedicated to inspiring personal and communal transformation. Running in person from May 1 to May 4, and continuing virtually from May 5 to May 11, the festival brought together filmmakers, thought leaders, artists and audiences under one shared mission: to elevate human consciousness through the universal language of film.

Opening night was held at the iconic Granada Theatre, where the atmosphere buzzed with anticipation for the premiere of The Wisdom of Happiness: A Conversation with the Dalai Lama. This moving film set the tone for a weekend steeped in spirituality, purpose and connection. The evening began with a beautiful live performance by Donna De Lory, Brianna Tam and LUME Apex, followed by opening remarks from Lynne Twist, bestselling author of The Soul of Money.

One of the most touching moments of the night came when acclaimed environmentalist and actor Ed Begley Jr. presented Jean-Michel Cousteau with the festival’s Lifetime Achievement Award, honouring his decades of work in ocean conservation and education.

Throughout the weekend, the festival offered a rich variety of experiences beyond film, including morning meditations, group singing, a screenwriting workshop, and interactive sessions tailored to engage both the heart and the mind. Each element echoed the festival’s core theme: spirituality and conscious evolution through the arts.

The festivities of Day 1 continued at Kiva Coworking, where attendees mingled with filmmakers and creators at the lively opening night party. With live music, locally curated catering—including Santa Barbara favourites like Oat Bakery and Chocolate Maya—and a welcoming atmosphere, the event provided a unique opportunity for connection and collaboration.

Wisdom of Happiness

Premiering on opening night at Santa Barbara’s historic Granada Theatre, Wisdom of Happiness offered audiences an unforgettable and deeply meditative cinematic experience. This film featured a rare and profound conversation with His Holiness the Dalai Lama, widely regarded as one of the world’s most beloved spiritual leaders.

In the film, Dalai Lama shares timeless insights on the pursuit of genuine, lasting happiness. With warmth, clarity and gentle humour, he reminds us that the key to joy is not something external—but something each of us already holds within.

Speaking directly to the viewer, the Dalai Lama encourages us to slow down, breathe deeply and savour the present moment. His words, simple yet powerful, cut through the noise of modern life and bring the focus back to what truly matters. As he puts it, “The very purpose of our life is happiness and joy.” This film not only uplifts but also serves as a guiding light for those seeking meaning in a fast-paced world.

Finding Happy

Directed, written and starring Maria Bertrand, Finding Happy is an inspiring documentary that reveals one woman’s unexpected path to healing during the uncertainty of 2020. What began as an ordinary day turned into a life-changing moment when Maria, out on a run, spotted a one-day-old injured sparrow lying on the ground. She picked him up with the simple intention of helping—but what she didn’t realize was how profoundly the bird would help her in return.

Their unlikely bond becomes the heart of the film. As Maria nurses the tiny bird back to health, she begins to rediscover her own sense of purpose, joy, and connection.

Beyond her personal story, Finding Happy expands into a global journey, showcasing powerful accounts from people around the world who also found emotional healing and companionship through animals. Whether it’s a dog, horse, bird or other creature, these stories speak to the universal truth that animals often show up for us when we need them most.

Uplifting and intimate, Finding Happy is an important reminder that even in life’s most difficult times, hope can arrive in the smallest and most unexpected forms. This film invites viewers to open their hearts, slow down and recognize the healing power of connection—both human and animal.

Wolf’s Message

Directed by Jim Spruell, Wolf’s Message tells the extraordinary true story of Michael “Wolf” Pasakarnis, a young man struck and killed by lightning—an event he seemingly predicted with uncanny clarity. The film explores how, when and where Wolf knew this moment would occur, leaving his parents and viewers questioning the boundaries of life and death.

Stricken by grief, Wolf’s parents seek the guidance of Suzanne Giesemann, an evidence-based medium, to uncover the deeper truth behind their son’s passing. What follows is a powerful journey that dives into the nature of consciousness, signs from beyond, and the possibility that our awareness continues far beyond our physical existence.
