Elegance, power and Longines: celebrating women in film at TIFF

September 12, 2024

I had the pleasure of being invited to attend the Time To Watch Us Fly event, to celebrate women in film and television, held last week during the opening of TIFF. It set a powerful tone for the festival ahead. Held at the luxurious Chambers Supper Club in downtown Toronto, the gathering was spearheaded by Longines in collaboration with Amanda Brugel and showcased the elegance and strength that define women in the industry.

Longines, a Swiss watchmaker founded in 1832, has long been synonymous with precision, elegance and heritage. Their timeless tagline, “Elegance is an Attitude,” isn’t just a statement—it’s a philosophy. This resonated throughout the afternoon, with guests embodying that very attitude. Longines has become more than a watch brand: it is a symbol of grace, endurance and sophistication. Known for its craftsmanship, Longines has a history deeply intertwined with sports timekeeping and supporting arts and culture. Their commitment to highlighting elegance in all aspects of life made their partnership with Amanda Brugel for this event a perfect match.

The Chambers Supper Club, a chic and stylish venue, was the ideal location for such a prestigious occasion. Its refined decor and intimate atmosphere enhanced the sense of celebration and glamour. As guests sipped cocktails before a seated lunch, it became clear that this venue, in the heart of Toronto, set the stage for an event that was equal parts inspiring and luxurious.

Brugel, a trailblazer in her own right, is best known for her powerful roles in The Handmaid’s Tale and Infinity Pool. She is a passionate advocate for women in the arts and her presence at the event was both significant and symbolic of what the day was about—women supporting women. In her keynote speech, Brugel celebrated the women in attendance and the strides they’ve made in the industry.  This was a room filled with creators, storytellers and visionaries, all shaping the future of film and television.

The event’s focus was not only on celebrating achievements but also on fostering meaningful connections. The conversations around the tables were rich with insights, collaboration and mutual admiration. From rising stars to established veterans, the afternoon was a celebration of the extraordinary women pushing boundaries, both on and off the screen. It felt like the future of film was in the room, being crafted and shaped by those who refuse to settle for less.

As champagne glasses clinked, there was a shared sense of purpose. This wasn’t just about looking back on what has been achieved but looking forward to what’s yet to come. The atmosphere was electric with a zest for a collaborative and empowering future. The attendees were, of course, dressed to impress, radiating glamour and confidence. Their collective presence embodied the message of the event: strength, elegance and unity. The day was a beautiful reminder of the power of women working together to create a better future for the next generation of filmmakers and storytellers.

In many ways, the event wasn’t just a kickoff to TIFF, but a statement. A statement that women are here to stay, and they are leading the charge in transforming the landscape of film and television. As Longines so aptly states, “Elegance is an Attitude”—and that attitude left an indelible mark on all who attended. This is just the beginning for the future of women in film, and the possibilities are truly endless.
