Rather than performing on stage, some of the world’s biggest names in comedy could be found walking the Red Carpet on June 6 in New York. Mike Birbiglia, Atsuko Okatsuka, Tig Notaro, Gary Gulman, London Hughes and Neil Patrick Harris joined the Tribeca Festival to talk about their new documentary, Group Therapy.
Sporting a magenta two-piece set, dice earrings, bangles and metallic sandals, Okatsuka crushed the Red Carpet, clearly having fun crouching, leaning and enjoying life. Hughes opted for a black dress with lace inserts and plenty of layered gold jewelry, while Harris was in a blue patterned shirt and a dark suit. Keeping it more casual, Gulman, Birbiglia and Notaro were all in sneakers along with button downs, polos, jeans or khakis. However, the focus wasn’t on what they were wearing or even their comedy last night, but rather their mental health.
This emotional, yet hilarious, documentary separates the popular personas making us laugh on stage from the actual people dealing with life’s struggles and mental health. Putting traumas, illnesses, anxieties and fears at the forefront, these comedians bravely dive deep into their own individual stories to shed light on a subject that was once very taboo.
“I was nervous about purposely being vulnerable and not trying to be funny,” said Hughes during the premiere.
“Since I started feeling better, I felt an obligation to share my story and so this was just a great opportunity to do it,” added Gulman.
Check out Group Therapy to join in on the healing journeys and lots of laughs along the way.
Tribeca Festival runs in New York until June 16, 2024.
