A journey through Asia: a High Tea experience at Shangri-La Toronto

My colleague and I had the pleasure of being invited to indulge in one of Toronto’s most unique and luxurious seasonal offerings: A Journey Through Asia, the newest afternoon tea experience at the iconic Shangri-La Toronto. Running from July 3 to August 31, this limited-time experience takes place in the hotel’s stunning lobby — setting the perfect stage for what can only be described as a memorable culinary escape.

The lobby itself is a feast for the senses — bathed in rich colours, adorned with elegant décor and filled with the subtle aroma of fresh florals. As we were seated, the soft, live piano melodies echoed through the space, instantly transporting us into a world of calm and sophistication. From the moment we arrived, we were met with warm hospitality and thoughtful attention to detail that made us feel incredibly welcomed.

Curated as a tribute to Shangri-La’s Asian roots, this afternoon tea menu explores the diverse culinary traditions of Asia through a modern Canadian lens. The journey draws inspiration from some of Shangri-La’s most cherished destinations, including Singapore, Hong Kong, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia and Thailand.

We began by selecting two aromatic teas: the bold and refined Darjeeling black tea, and the delicately floral Osmanthus Heritage blend — both of which perfectly complemented the dishes to come.

The savoury portion of our tasting journey was a true highlight. Singapore’s kaya toast was reimagined with a rich free-range egg yolk emulsion and silky coconut cream, while a vibrant fresh roll inspired by the Philippines, wrapped in an herb crêpe and filled with summer vegetables and cashew purée, offered a refreshing contrast. From China, the West Lake-style salmon crudo was delicately seasoned with Szechuan peppercorn and tamari soy glaze, and Hong Kong’s influence came through in a warm, comforting corn and cheese bun paired with pineapple mustard — a deliciously playful twist.

The sweet offerings were nothing short of enchanting. India’s chai-misu offered a fragrant fusion of masala chai and almond feuilletine, striking the perfect balance between warmth and sweetness. Indonesia’s tart calamansi mousse with kaya and makrut lime ganache delivered a zesty brightness, while Cambodia’s banana crémeux, finished with tonka bean cream and salted caramel, melted in our mouths. Thailand’s famous mango sticky rice was reinterpreted as a tropical pavlova, and the experience ended on a whimsical note with a mooncake-inspired cheesecake from China, infused with taro and mochi.

Without a doubt, this was one of the most exquisite and thoughtfully curated high tea experiences we’ve ever attended. Every element — from the creativity of the menu to the meticulous service — reflected Shangri-La’s signature commitment to excellence. A Journey Through Asia is a must-try for both locals and visitors seeking a fresh, flavourful, and culturally immersive experience this summer.
