There is something transformative about putting on a beautifully cut coat in the middle of autumn. The shoulders settle, the belt draws everything together and, suddenly, you feel ready to step outside. With the launch of Max Mara Le Parfum, the Italian fashion house brings that familiar feeling to fragrance, translating its approach to dressing into something intimate and invisible. If a garment can act as a second skin, why shouldn’t a scent?
For Max Mara, clothing has always been about more than appearance. It is a form of architecture, shaped around the body to convey presence and confidence. Le Parfum extends that philosophy beyond fabric, exploring how fragrance can offer a similar sense of assurance. The idea is less about creating a new identity than recognizing your own: that quiet moment when everything comes together, and you feel entirely yourself.
It is a concept brought to life by Florence Pugh in a campaign shot by Mario Sorrenti. The Academy Award-nominated actress lends her distinctive presence to a vision of femininity grounded in authenticity. The tagline of the campaign captures the mood with a fittingly assured promise: “When you’re ready, you’ll know.”
Pugh feels like a compelling choice for this story. Her individuality and natural confidence align with a fragrance conceived as a discreet companion. The campaign frames readiness as something personal, an internal recognition that requires no announcement. That sensibility connects naturally to Max Mara’s wardrobe: pieces designed to support the woman wearing them, with enough character to make their presence felt.
The connection is equally clear in the bottle. Inspired by the house’s Ready Coat, its architectural glass silhouette echoes the proportions and structure of the garment, while a lacquered belt at the centre provides an unmistakable reference to its inspiration. It is a thoughtful translation of fashion into an object for the dressing table. The coat’s defining gesture becomes the bottle’s focal point, carrying the design story from wardrobe to fragrance.
The composition follows a similarly considered approach. Tuberose absolute, vanilla and sandalwood form part of a fragrance that explores femininity with a masculine twist. Max Mara describes a precise balance between its ingredients, intended to create an enveloping, reassuring effect that wears like a second skin. Formulated with 90 per cent ingredients of natural origin, Le Parfum is also entirely vegan.
What makes the launch interesting is the consistency of its central idea. The campaign, bottle and fragrance all return to the relationship between what we wear and how we feel. In fashion, confidence can begin with the smallest detail: a collar adjusted, a sleeve smoothed, a belt fastened just so. With Le Parfum, Max Mara adds another gesture to that ritual. A finishing touch before the door opens, the evening begins or the next chapter unfolds.
The coat has its place in the wardrobe. Now, its spirit has a place on the dressing table, too.
