The Lyttelton restaurant at The Stafford London and Julien’s Auctions of Beverly Hills have teamed up to give visitors the rare opportunity to view a collection of dresses worn by HRH Diana, Princess of Wales.
Coinciding with the launch of Lyttelton’s Chef’s Spices Afternoon Tea, the hotel showcased the dresses from November 17 to 23, in the lobby and the Sutherland Room. The exhibit included two iconic dresses, one by designer Zandra Rhodes and one by Catherine Walker.
The Walker dress — a green, slender-fitting chartreuse gown, lined with emerald green silk — was worn by the Princess on November 11, 1993, to a banquet at the Dorchester Hotel hosted by his majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia. Walker was one of Princess Diana’s favourite fashion designers, and for 16 years she designed garments for the Princess. A custom-made wardrobe bag and dress form accompanied each design.
With classic English heritage dating back to the 18th century, the Stafford Hotel was a suitable choice for the dress exhibit. The new afternoon tea menu includes treats such as star anise dark chocolate and orange roulade, cardamom-mango éclairs and Christmas pudding cheesecake. The teas are special blends created exclusively for the Stafford by Canton Tea Co.
The dresses will be transported to Los Angeles to be auctioned later this month.
