The Hamptons, on Long Island’s South Fork, haven’t slowed down since 2020. The North Fork, however, provides a respite from crowds but not the beach. The Menhaden, a charming boutique hotel in the town of Greenport and only a few hours’ drive from New York City, is where we recommend settling in for a few days of exploration.
The Menhaden’s intimate 16 rooms are beachy-chic, bright and incredibly comfortable. Each floor has its own kitchenette stocked with delicious goodies for guests to enjoy at their leisure. Strong WiFi and a desk in select rooms also make The Menhaden a great home-base from which to work, for mid-week travelers.
The general store on the main floor is not to be missed, and stacked with local goodies from all over the North Fork as well as homeware, suncare and much more. It’s a wonderful stop for a morning espresso, a picnic lunch and for little regional souvenirs on the way home. It’s also where you can grab a gourmet s’mores kit to be enjoyed by one of the property’s rooftop firepits!
One of the best perks of staying at The Menhaden is their seasonally-curated list of activities to do around Greenport. The team at the property has strong relationships with some of the finest institutions in the area, and the hardest job you’ll have is deciding which fantastic activities to take them up on. Some of our favourites include a sundowner at 67 Steps Beach, a top-of-the-line sailing experience, a curated wine tour at some of the best vineyards the area has to offer, or a curated wine sampling enjoyed from the property itself.
While in Greenport, try and snag a table at The General Store, located off of the lobby, and the perfect spot to grab your morning coffee and a croissant. The property features For Five coffee and a selection of gourmet snacks and provisions. It’s also the perfect place to grab some fresh items for your afternoon picnic. Better yet, ask the concierge to have a picnic ready for the road.
Their exclusive roof deck, overlooking Greenport Harbor, features a bar, firepits and lounge seating. Perfect for a midday pick-me-up or a sunset snack.
