On Friday, August 21, NYC Second Chance Rescue brought its fifth annual Concert for a Cause to a private estate in Bridgehampton, bringing together animal advocates and philanthropists for an evening centered around saving animals. Grammy Award-winning singer Ashanti and platinum-selling artist Fabolous headlined the event with an ’00s throwback concert that got everyone out of their seats.

The event honoured legendary entrepreneur and longtime animal advocate John Paul DeJoria, one of the co-creators of John Paul Mitchell and Patrón Tequila, and a fierce animal activist. DeJoria also took the opportunity to introduce Pawpoint, a new science-based wellness company focused on supporting healthy aging and overall well-being in dogs. The company’s approach targets key biological pathways associated with inflammation and oxidative stress, with a focus on immune balance, cellular health, vitality, and helping dogs maintain resilience as they age.

NYC Second Chance Rescue, founded in 2009 by Jennifer Brooks and Lisa Blanco,  focuses on the animals that are often the hardest to place, including critically injured and medically complex dogs and cats, senior and hospice animals, large-breed dogs, and vulnerable cats. More than 70 active volunteers help bring the organization’s mission to life. As Kate McEntee, Director of Partnerships and Special Events, put it, “Every animal we save has a story, and every second chance is made possible by people who choose to care.”

That sense of urgency was also reflected in remarks from co-founder Jennifer Brooks during the evening. “For 17 years, we’ve been able to say yes to animals, when they had no choice. Together, we have saved almost 18,000 animals. 18,000 animals were given a second chance.” But Brooks also addressed the difficult reality facing shelters today, adding, “I wish I could stand here tonight and tell you things are getting better in shelters, but the truth is, they’re not.” It was a reminder that while an evening like Concert for a Cause is a celebration, the work continues long after the music ends.
