Boldness meets playfulness: SexyHair in Toronto

July 16, 2024

We were thrilled to attend a playful and bold event in Toronto last week to celebrate the iconic hairstyling brand, SexyHair. Held at the scarlet-coloured cocktail bar Kissa on buzzing King Street, we were privy to an alluring and vibrant gathering where the venue was transformed into a glitzy, disco-ball concept—complete with strawberry liqueur cocktails held by those with beautiful, sexy hair.

The moment you arrived, you were transported to a world of SexyHair’s iconic red styling products, beautiful neon signs, ruby-coloured lighting and a buzzing space for a performance. The brand, created in 1998 by award-winning hairdresser Michael O’Rourke, celebrated its new and classic styling products such as “Spray and Play” and “Powder Play Lite,” designed to maximize sexiness, bounciness and empowerment for anyone who uses them.

An impressive SexyHair-inspired menu of tantalizing cocktails, featuring cranberry cosmos and dragonfruit-infused drinks, was paired with saucy bite-sized canapés such as glazed gyozas. With the crimson-red lights reflecting off the pink and silver disco balls, the event was filled with laughter and empowering self-expression. Guests were invited to play around with the brand’s product line, with hair touch-ups available at makeover stations, alongside decadent chocolate and strawberry fondant cakes. Did we mention the epic performance by Gia Metric?

The brand’s message is powerful: “We create the products, you make them sexy.” An ode to how you can create full-of-life hair that pushes the envelope and to the idea that sexiness is created by you—through your own self-expression. We witnessed voluminous hairstyles and smooth, glossy tresses as the brand pushed the boundaries of how hair can transform your confidence. The event and brand both captured the intimate relationship we have with our hair—a true celebration of how one can express themselves differently each day.

Because the product line is buildable and flexible, it can be used on both dry and wet styles. Some of our favourite products include the “Powder Play Lite,” a powder that creates texture, is colourless, and has 48-hour holding power. Another treasured product since the early 2000s is bringing sexy back: the iconic, tall red can of “Spray & Play,” perhaps the most luxurious hairspray you can get your hands on. A summer-friendly product is the “Surfer Girl” texturizing spray, which helps create and maintain beach waves no matter how far you are from the sea.

As the DJ played upbeat and energetic tunes, guests mingled in conversation, danced and captured moments with disco-balled goblets in their hands. Each guest left with a playful pink and red goodie bag filled with the brand’s most popular products, remembering that sexiness is defined by their own, true self.
