Food is love, comfort and connection all wrapped up in a delectable package. It’s the universal language that brings people together, sparks conversations and creates memories. And nowhere is this more evident than at Laylak, Lebanese Cuisine, a culinary gem in Toronto. With two locations, we had the pleasure of sampling the one right in the heart of downtown.
Whether you’re planning a girls’ night out, a business meeting or a family dinner, Laylak is the venue that covers all bases and does it with flair. The moment you step into Laylak, you’re greeted by a breathtaking art piece by Max Jamali – butterflies that seem to flutter at the entrance, setting the stage for what’s to come. You haven’t even set foot inside, and you’re already impressed. Walking in, your eyes are drawn to the sleek bar, the luxurious shades of purple that wash over the venue and the pièce de résistance: a stunning chandelier that commands the main room’s center roof. Every detail is meticulously thought out, from the branded pillows to the ornate window moldings that add a touch of elegance to the decor.
But let’s get down to the nitty-gritty – the mixology and the food. Laylak’s cocktails are nothing short of Instagram gold, but their wine list is what truly shines. Featuring wines from Lebanon and even Jordan, it was my first time trying both, and I am coming back for the bottle. Trust me, one sip, and you’ll be planning your next visit. One standout cocktail was the ‘Laylak Breeze’, as delightful to the palate as all their cocktails are to the eye.

We indulged in a bit of everything, and let me tell you, their Kibbeh Nayah (the raw version) is otherworldly. It’s the perfect spot to share a few plates family-style, including their velvety hummus, smoky baba ghanoush, mohamarah, crisp fattoush salad and succulent stuffed vine leaves. Just a heads up, if you’re thinking of sticking to your diet, abandon all hope now.
And then came the main course: meat, both grilled and braised. The Moghrabieh, the braised lamb dish, felt straight out of a movie. The meat was so tender it practically melted in your mouth, each bite bursting with flavour. Just when you think you’ve reached your limit, they bring out the desserts. Suddenly, you find yourself with a second wind, ready to devour every sweet morsel.
What truly stood out to me about this experience was how I was already planning my return trip while still at the table, contemplating all the other dishes I needed to try. As someone who eats out frequently, it’s rare to find a place that captivates my senses as much as Laylak did. The staff played no small part in this – kind, attentive and always smiling. You can tell that the head chef, Hazem Al Hamwi, loves what he does. For him, cooking is not just a job but a blessing, and this passion is evident in every dish served.
Laylak is a must-try this summer, autumn and winter. The vibe fits every occasion and every season, making it a staple on your dining list. Whether you’re looking to impress, indulge or simply enjoy a memorable meal, Laylak delivers on all fronts, with a side of elegance and a sprinkle of cheeky charm.
