During this year’s Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), the Prince of Wales Theatre hosted the international premiere of Piece by Piece, a groundbreaking film that explores Pharrell Williams’ life through the imaginative world of Lego animation. Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Morgan Neville, the film offers a fresh and creative look into the career of one of music’s most influential figures.
Neville, celebrated for his emotionally resonant documentaries, brings his signature storytelling to this unique project. Known for 20 Feet from Stardom (2013), which won an Academy Award, and Won’t You Be My Neighbor? (2018), a heartfelt exploration of Fred Rogers, Neville has once again captivated audiences with his ability to connect on a deeply personal level—a hallmark that continues in Piece by Piece.
Piece by Piece is more than just a documentary: it’s a docudrama that interweaves real-life interviews with animated portrayals of an impressive roster of guest stars. The film features Lego-animated versions of celebrities such as Jay-Z, Pusha-T, Busta Rhymes, Missy Elliott, Timbaland and many others, alongside dramatic re-enactments that bring Williams’ story to life. The narrative starts with Williams’ early years growing up in Virginia Beach’s Atlantis Projects. It explores his formative influences, including his church upbringing, the impact of his grandmother, and his early connections with notable figures like Missy Elliott and Timbaland.
The film follows Williams’ journey from his early days as an intern at Teddy Riley’s studio—where he contributed to the hit “Rump Shaker”—to his collaborations with hip-hop legends like NORE, Jay-Z and Snoop Dogg. It highlights key milestones in his career, including his work with The Neptunes and N.E.R.D. and the creation of iconic tracks such as “Grindin'” and “Happy.” Additionally, Piece by Piece does not shy away from the challenges Williams faced, including the pressures of fame and personal struggles, ultimately showcasing his resilience and recovery from some of the darkest periods in his career.
Piece by Piece is not just a cinematic experience but a celebration of Pharrell Williams’ remarkable career and creative spirit. Through its innovative use of Lego animation and its heartfelt storytelling, the film offers a unique and memorable tribute to one of music’s brightest stars.
When we attended the premiere screening of Piece by Piece during TIFF, it was met with enthusiastic acclaim. The audience responded with cheers, laughter and emotional reactions, underscoring the film’s profound impact. Following the screening, Williams and Neville engaged in a thoughtful discussion about their collaboration, sharing insights into the creative process and the film’s journey. To conclude the evening, Williams delivered a surprising and unforgettable moment by bringing out a live orchestra to perform the film’s theme. This special performance added an extra layer of joy and celebration to the event, leaving attendees with a lasting impression of the film’s musical and emotional depth.
Following its TIFF premiere, Piece by Piece continues to create buzz with its official release on October 11.
