A big adventure with Little Sister

January 8, 2025

Nestled on Portland Street in Toronto, Little Sister is a true gem that marries vibrant, flavour-packed cuisine with a lively, inviting ambiance. When my FAJO colleagues and I set out for an evening of great food and hearty laughs, this place was a natural pick—and it didn’t disappoint. The experience left us in awe, from the moment we stepped into its modern, artfully styled space that boasts warm wood accents, exposed brick and touches of Indonesian flair, creating an effortlessly Instagram-worthy backdrop.

This energetic spot is a testament to Toronto’s diverse dining scene, seamlessly blending Dutch-Indonesian flavours in an approachable yet authentic way. The menu offers dishes that are bold, exciting and perfect for sharing, and made our group dinner even more engaging.

Our feast began with Jakarta Spiced Beef Rolls, crispy on the outside and filled with rich, seasoned beef. We couldn’t stop there. The Grilled Marinated Chicken Satay, skewered and expertly charred, delivered a smoky, tender bite that paired perfectly with a spicy peanut sauce, hinting at lemongrass and coconut undertones for a deep, earthy flavour.

However, the star for me had to be the Semur Java, the braised short ribs that melted effortlessly with each bite. Braised to perfection in a blend of spices, these ribs were hearty and slightly sweet, with a comforting profile that spoke of long hours simmering in aromatic ingredients. And then, there was the Kol Goreng Nano Nano, which, let me tell you, featured the best Brussels sprouts I’ve ever tasted—crispy, caramelized and tossed with tangy notes that danced on the palate.

The cocktail lineup at Little Sister was just as memorable. We kicked off our evening with the Little Brother, a tequila-based concoction that balanced citrus and a touch of heat—trust me, it’s a must for any tequila fan. The Rum Punch was equally impressive, strong and bursting with tropical notes that whisked us straight to a beachside evening. Each drink was crafted with an attention to detail that elevated our experience from a simple dinner to a night out filled with cheers and stories shared over clinking glasses.

As the evening continued, filled with laughter and satisfied sighs, we caught wind of a not-so-secret secret: the hidden speakeasy behind the scenes. While I can’t spill all the details, I’ll say this—next time you’re there, ask about the bar with cards and look for the lava lamp. If you’re lucky, you’ll meet a charismatic British mixologist who will make you a cocktail that could easily be the highlight of your night.

Little Sister is a vibrant culinary escape. With another location on Yonge Street, the love for this place isn’t confined to just one neighbourhood. I can’t wait to go back and relive the upbeat atmosphere, incredible food and unforgettable moments shared with friends. Whether you’re a longtime fan of Indonesian cuisine or a first-timer, Little Sister promises an evening that blends flavours, fun and a little adventure.
