Divine Body Treatment at Miraj Hammam Spa by Caudalie

January 26, 2016

A tranquil oasis in the heart of Toronto’s financial district sounds like an oxymoron, but when you step inside Miraj Hammam Spa by Caudalie, you’ll understand how a luxury experience can transport you to another world.

Long winter days call for extra attention to skincare and, if you can swing it, a few warm retreats from the cold. With his in mind, I was eager to escape for a couple of heavenly hours at Shangri-La’s renowned spa, a sanctuary that combines the old-world charm of Morocco with modern Parisian elegance. Moreover, the description of the Divine Body Treatment—a 60-minute exfoliating scrub followed by a 30-minute massage—sounded like the perfect remedy for drying weather.

Developed in France, the Caudalie beauty line uses anti-oxidant powers of grapevines and grape Polyphenols. The brand prides itself on using natural, environmentally friendly active ingredients and sourcing vine extracts from French vineyards in Bordeaux, Champagne and Burgundy. Caudalie has integrated these products and philosophies into its spa treatments around the world, which makes the experience all the more decadent and beneficial.

I always like arriving at a spa a few minutes early to unwind before my treatment, and in the case of Miraj Hammam Spa, also have a chance to appreciate the exquisite surroundings. With decorative stone fountains, intricate wood carvings and plush seating upholstered in luxurious textiles, it was easy to sink into the moment and completely decompress.

Upon arrival, a member of the attentive staff showed me to the dressing room—where I put on a robe—and then escorted me to their enchanting Moroccan-style lounge to await my treatment while reading magazines and nibbling on dried fruits.

I was soon guided to a private room by Amber, who made me feel completely at ease despite this being my first visit to a Hammam-style experience. With this in mind, the spa provides disposable panties and sarongs for anyone who may be shy about baring it all.

Amber began the treatment by applying Caudalie’s Divine Body Scrub, which exfoliates the skin using brown sugar, as well as grape, argan, sesame and hibiscus plant oils. After my entire body was scrubbed, I went into a private steam room and shower to rinse off and immediately felt how silky smooth my skin was. Sitting in the steam room not only opens your pores, but it’s also the perfect antidote for tense muscles.

Though I didn’t think I could get anymore relaxed, the massage portion of the treatment was the icing on the cake. Amber used Caudalie’s Divine Oil, which contains grapeseed, argan, hibiscus and sesame oils. The multipurpose dry oil can be used on your body, face and hair. In addition to feeling the relaxation benefits of the massage, my skin felt incredibly soft and was pleasantly scented with rose and vanilla with woody undertones.

To end the treatment on a sweet note, I was brought back to the lounge, where I sunk into a pile of pillows and indulged in honey-soaked baklava, fresh grapes and Moroccan mint tea. I almost felt like I could fall asleep and when I finally looked at the time, I could not believe how many hours had drifted by. After finally getting changed and leaving, I floated all the way home, feeling more divine than ever before.
