They were one of Canada’s most iconic music bands, and now there is a four-part documentary series about The Tragically Hip that will no doubt be a hit, just like so many of their songs.
The Tragically Hip: No Dress Rehearsal had its World Premiere on Sept.5 as part of the Toronto International FIlm Festival. Kicking off the excitement on opening day of the event was the Red Carpet for this much-awaited series from producer-director Mike Downie — brother of Gord Downie. As TIFF highlights, Downie, alongside Rob Baker, Johnny Fay, Paul Langlois and Gord Sinclair “went on to make music that defined Canada to the world, and more importantly, Canada to Canadians.”
The series includes never-before-seen archival footage with new interviews with the band, family, friends and celebrity fans, such as Will Arnett, Dan Aykroyd, Jay Baruchel, Sarah Harmer, Geddy Lee and even Justin Trudeau. It tracks their lives in bars, studios and the big stadium shows, but also provides insight into their personal tragedies along the way, and shines the light on how this helped them bond together.
Following the conclusion of the Festival, TIFF announced that the series won one of its most coveted prizes: the People’s Choice Documentary Award. Starting today, the series is also now streaming on Prime Video.
