On April 25, Mayor of Toronto John Tory—along with notable guests and artist Gary Taxali—unveiled The Brain Project, a massive art-meets-fundraising initiative that will unfold in the city this summer.

The Brain Project is an art movement to raise public awareness and serve as a vehicle for fundraising in support of research into Alzheimer’s and age-related dementias at Baycrest Health Sciences. One hundred brain sculptures will be on display around the city this summer.

Many artists, including Gary Taxali, participated in the creation of the more than 100 sculptures for this project.

World-renowned artists and local talents from arts communities, including fashion, architecture, culture, music and visual arts, are participating in the project. Mr. Brainwash and Karim Rashid are among them. What will certainly generate additional global awareness for the project are the latest additions to the roster: the frontman of Muse, Matthew Bellamy, and Kim Kardashian West with her daughter North West. It is yet to be announced whether they will come to the city to unveil their art installations.

Meanwhile on Monday, Gary Taxali unveiled his piece, called My Heart Knows You. The artwork explores the connection of memory, that can be damaged by brain diseases like dementia and Alzheimer, and love, that stays in the heart.

The project is presented by Telus and sponsored by various philanthropists and corporations.

Art installations will be on display at the key Toronto sites and various venues across the city, from Mel Lastman Square to the Distillery District. The Brain Project is launching on June 3, and will run until the end of August 2016.
