New York City’s finest gathered at the Museum of Modern Art on Feb.6 for Alexandre Birman’s private viewing of his spring 2014 collection.
The feminine footwear was thoughtfully displayed in lush greenery that made Birman’s bright pieces stand out like flowers. Inspired by Henri Rousseau’s “The Dream”, this collection exuded femininity with its delicate and strappy detailing. For example, a bright yellow sandal had a petal-like back, while a bright red piece featured a thick ankle strap with a leaf-like cut-out.
Birman expertly mixed textures, such as leather, snakeskin and sateen. Other memorable motifs included a fuchsia feather across the side of the shoe.
Celebrity DJ Alexandra Richards, who has been featured in FAJO in an exclusive interview in 2012, provided tunes for the night.
A native of Brazil, Birman was born into a family that has dominated the South American footwear market since the 1970s. “I was raised in a shoe factory — and that’s not marketing, that’s the true story of my life,” he often says. He designed his first shoe at the age of 12. In 2008, the designer launched his namesake Alexandre Birman collection that was entirely created by hand from luxurious, imported raw materials and exotic reptile skins reminiscent of his Brazilian roots. Birman was also inducted in 2013 as a member of the Council of Fashion Designers of America.
His celebrity fans include Kate Hudson, Jennifer Lawrence, Anne Hathaway, Demi Moore, Blake Lively, Jessica Alba, Gisele Bundchen, Zoe Saldana, Alessandra Ambrosio, Ashley Greene and Amanda Seyfried.
