Montréal was bustling with fashionistas this past week, as the city hosted its 20th annual fashion week. Many top designers were taking part in the show this year.

Montréal Fashion Week.

Rud by Rudsak had a collection that echoed neutrality and contrast. Grey was married with black, leather contrasted against fur, big fat woollen scarves adorned model necks and body-hugging feather coats were tailored to perfection. The collection was very matte and chic.

The BODYBAG by Jude told the story of Snow White, picking up on the crimson of the deadly apple. The rest of the colours were subdued, a mixture of black and various shades of gray. Dresses were structured and elegant, with dramatic detailing. The jersey pieces draped perfectly, incorporating the hood trend. Judith Desjardins’ second collection, J.U.D.E., continued the air of dark beauty with classic shapes in black and white.

Dinh Bá presented yet another exciting show, his 15th for women and 8th for men. Made entirely in Quebec, the line featured oversized sweaters and harem pants for men. For women, Dinh Bá suggests body-hugging dresses with silk and bow detailing in typical fall colours – think black, white, burgundy and deep purple.

ENVERS by Yves Jean Lacasse presented Anna Karenina meets Scheherazade, a turn of the century Russian dvoryanye seduced by luscious Turkish silks. Skirts were long with Victorian detailing or voluminous and below the knee in every colour imaginable, paired with an array of fur coats. The men were something out of Around the World in 80 Days, in tapered dark pants and romantic jackets with very full sleeves.

TELÍO featured the works of 25 young designers and their interpretations of The Great White North. White fur, brown leather, silver sequins, tan silk and slashes of blue summarized the collection. So You Think You Can Dance Canada’s 2008 champion, Nico Archambault, presented the winning five designers.

The week’s most anticipated – and closing – show did not disappoint. Marie Saint Pierre presented mysterious women strolling through London fog – simple yet incredibly feminine. Luxurious and sophisticated, the organza dresses, cashmere jersey sweaters and sequined jackets were finished to perfection, never straying from the architectural aesthetic. Orange was the chosen accent colour, paired seamlessly with shades of gray.
