As the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York progresses, we present to our readers some of the best shows at the event.
The spring/summer 2013 collections are filled with colour, vigour and variety. Take a look at some of our top picks.
Charlotte Ronson
Favourites at this show were a peplum dress in beach-blues, greens and mints; a colour-block dress in cobalt, black and white; and vinyl jackets. Some jackets that stood out were a clear vinyl one worn over lace, a black vinyl piece paired with a grey polka dot ensemble – whose fabric and pattern were used in various pieces – and a bold pink vinyl number, worn over a pink-pattern dress with an accented neckline.
Ronson’s more fitted fishnet jacket was paired with an aqua dress, giving a subtle hint of colour on top and bright focus on the bottom. The accessories of choice were oversized bags that the models carried as clutches or over their shoulders.
Spotted in celebrity-row were Rachel Zoe, Paris Hilton, AnnaSophia Robb (the lucky young lady set to play a young Carrie Bradshaw in CW’s The Carrie Diaries), Cory Kennedy, Holland Roden, Russell Simmons with ex-wife Kimora Lee, and none other than the designer’s sister DJ – Samantha Ronson.
Jill Stuart
Jill Stuart’s spring is based on the various shades of nude, and includes a variety of styles, textures and eras. Beige, apricot, black and sea foam were her colours of choice, with pieces that could have been pulled out of the 20s, 30s, 40s or 50s. Tea-length dresses were met with cage-net ones, a crop-bustier was worn under a stunning trench coat, and Stuart’s feminine styles were very obvious in a magnificent A-line skirt or a dress with flutter sleeves.
Other favourites included glamorous sequin dresses, an almost-white blouse carefully covered in flower appliqués, and a nude satin dress with an apricot bow around the neck, paired with heavy garnet platforms.
Among celebrity attendees were Rose Byrne, Cory Kennedy, Brooke Shields and designer Kelly Bensimon.
Custo Barcelona
In a colourful pattern and texture-filled ode to the 70s, Custo Barcelona earned his standing ovation in New York at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week this season. If any designer could perfectly pull off this many geometric shapes, fringes, neon brights, layers, hot shorts, bustiers and tinted sunglasses in a show featuring both male and female models, it was this Spanish native.
Models strutted down the runway in some notable pieces:a V-neck mini-dress in a tribal print, with a dress-length mesh vest; a bandeau-style top sweetheart neckline; and a one-shoulder strap paired with matching bikini bottom. Some other trends included a deep-cut black vinyl mesh top, paired with leather capri-length leggings; as well as “Custo”-labeled varsity tank tops over skinny pants.
Spotted celebrities were Jay Manuel, Alexa Ray Joel and Miss USA.
