A holiday escape that feels like magic

The holidays can be chaotic, even when they are the one thing you have been planning toward all year. Flights get booked up, plans fall through, and sometimes you just want something magical without the stress of travel; enter The Ritz-Carlton, Toronto. This is the kind of festive staycation that makes you forget about the outside world and sink completely into beautifully designed holiday wonders.

From the moment you walk through the doors, every inch of the hotel feels intentionally festive. Christmas trees in every corner, lights that glimmer just a little bit brighter, and décor that feels both classic and joyful. Right in the heart of the lobby stands the Sweet Marvel, a towering edible installation crafted by the Ritz-Carlton culinary team to celebrate the season. Thousands of hand-cut gingerbread, chocolate and maple cookie leaves form a canopy that feels almost alive with colour, while the trunk itself is built from more than 2,000 gingerbread slabs bound with royal icing. It is exquisite craftsmanship and holiday artistry wrapped in one that sets the tone for what lies ahead.

Club Lounge Living with Ritz Kids

The Ritz-Carlton, Toronto’s Club Lounge offering is a defining part of the holiday staycation experience. The Lounge itself is perched on the top floor, making it feel like a home away from home with the best views in the city. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame the skyline and the CN Tower, and in winter, watching the snow drift down over the city, is a moment in itself.

The lounge becomes your anchor throughout the stay, offering breakfast, light snacks, afternoon bites, cocktails, desserts, all part of the Club experience. The pace is unwound, the service is quiet yet attentive, and the festive décor is intentional without being overwhelming. In a season defined by busy-ness, the Club Lounge offers a place to slow down, unwind and savour the moment.

Our one-bedroom Club Lounge corner suite was nothing short of magical, filled with festive room offers. Not only was there an elegant full-sized Christmas tree in the bedroom, but there was also a baby mini-tree in the living area, both adorned with ornaments that felt curated rather than generic. It created a sense of ceremony every time we entered the room, as though we were stepping into our own little holiday world through these upgrades.

The Ritz Kids festive setup felt like it was designed specifically for us rather than off a shelf. A cozy holiday tent waited in the living room, fully decorated and ready for play. Personalized festive amenities included beautifully crafted chocolate snowmen and a charcuterie and cheese board that instantly elevated the sense of arrival. The pièce de résistance was a chocolate mosaic with intricate holiday imagery, beautifully detailed and almost too stunning to touch.

What delighted my son the most was his own stocking, carefully engraved with the letter E for Elio. These are the sorts of details that make a hotel feel like it truly understands how to create joyful holiday memories for families. Did I mention that they restocked the experience with an edible cookie canvas and sugar icing on our second day? Heaven for both parents and kids, with a side of a sugar rush.

Toys and Tea – A Festive Afternoon Tradition at Epoch Bar & Kitchen Terrace

The Ritz-Carlton’s Toys and Tea experience ranks among the most memorable holiday moments we’ve had. Upon arrival, you are presented with a beautiful box of loose-leaf teas to smell and sample before deciding which one you would like for your afternoon tea service. It is a sensory moment that elevates the experience, merging sight, smell and anticipation before a single bite is had. The kids are invited to choose from their own tea and beverage selections too, letting them feel truly included in the ceremony.

There are distinct menus for adults and children and both are delightful in their own ways. The adult menu includes refined finger sandwiches, beautifully baked scones and delicate pieces, all paired perfectly with your chosen tea or an optional glass of champagne. The standout from the savoury items was the bite size lobster rolls and the scones did not disappoint either. The children’s menu is playful and delicious, thoughtfully designed so that little ones have items that feel special. We happily blended elements from both menus, creating a shared experience that felt both elevated and inclusive.

The highlight, however, are the edible “toys.” Each chocolate piece feels like a tiny work of art: a delicate chocolate nutcracker, festive presents that look like they were wrapped by artisans and even a chocolate train that felt joyful on the palate as it was on the eyes. The craftsmanship was remarkable, and the experience as a whole felt whimsical yet sophisticated; a rare balance that the Ritz-Carlton truly nailed.

For every Toys and Tea service sold, a toy is donated to SickKids Hospital, adding a beautiful layer of meaning to the indulgence.

Dinner at TOCA – An Italian Culinary Celebration

That evening, we made our way to TOCA, where Chef Alessandro Panattoni and his team welcomed us into their Italian culinary world. TOCA is known for tradition fused with innovation and it showed in every dish we shared.

We began with a vibrant salmon tartare, followed by burrata that was creamy and balanced, paired with seasonal accoutrements that lifted every bite. The lobster pasta was an undeniable highlight; rich and comforting, yet refined in its execution. Chef Alessandro graciously offered a preview of the upcoming winter menu: a saffron risotto with bone marrow that was indulgent and deeply satisfying, promising to be one of the standout dishes of the season.

The atmosphere was warm, elegant and perfect for unwinding after an afternoon of sensory delights. The bonus round with TOCA is that if you find yourself in Toronto for Christmas, make sure to book their Christmas dinner special in advance as spots fill out fast. The evening will be dazzling, the food will be extraordinary and the experience unparalleled. If dinner at home is more your vibe, grab a turkey to go from the team, that will feed up to four people.

Festive Dreams at LANO – Gingerbread, evening bites and beyond

The next morning, we returned to the Club Lounge for breakfast and it lived up to every expectation. The pastry selection alone could be a meal unto itself; perfectly flaky croissants, morning buns and freshly baked scones that paired beautifully with coffee or tea. There were hot dishes, a range of freshly squeezed juices and lighter, healthier options for those who might have indulged the night before.

It was a slow, unhurried breakfast that allowed us to ease into the day with comfort and calm. Later, we headed downstairs to LANO, where one of the most joyful holiday experiences awaited. Known for its exquisite coffees, beautiful ambiance and inventive drinks, LANO transforms during the holidays into a gingerbread house decorating haven.

Chef Ignatius “Iggy” Prinsloo and the pastry team walked us through our gingerbread session with warmth and expertise. The house arrived pre-assembled, leaving you free to focus on the joyful part of decorating rather than the structural stress that usually comes with gingerbread kits.

An abundance of icing colours, sprinkles, gummy bears, M&Ms, candy canes and festive confections were laid out as though for a painter’s palette. The experience was playful, indulgent, and full of laughter as we built our creation together. When the decorating was done, the team carefully boxed our gingerbread house for easy transport home so the beauty we created could remain intact. And yes, you get to take home all the leftover candy, which will make the return back a happy one indeed!

For those interested, the gingerbread decorating sessions at LANO are available throughout the holiday period, including pre-assembled houses, choices of icing colours, candies, and child-friendly beverages included.

Gingerbread making aside, we also found that LANO doubles beautifully as a pre-dinner stop. Whether you choose classic cocktails, a refreshing glass of bubbles, or a creative seasonal drink, it feels relaxed, festive, and perfectly suited for conversation. Oysters, burrata, and fritto misto with calamari and shrimp are our favourites and the ambiance at night is quietly elegant with just the right warmth for winter.

Dinner at EPOCH Bar & Kitchen Terrace

Dinner at EPOCH was another highlight of our festive weekend. EPOCH is a restaurant that celebrates produce-forward cuisine with creative and globally inspired flavours.

We began with a seafood tower meant for sharing: perfectly seasoned lobster, oysters, hamachi crudo, crab claws, and poached shrimp awaited us with mignonette, lemon and a hot sauce accompaniment that lifted every bite. A beef carpaccio followed with Parmigiano-Reggiano, arugula, black truffle and lemon, creating a beautiful contrast of textures and flavours.

For mains, the black cod with sake miso was sublime; tender, nuanced and rich without being heavy. We paired it with the Viet grilled chicken thighs and coconut pandan sauce, another textural experience that balanced aromatic heat with tropical sweetness.

We finished our evening with what is truly one of the best brownies I have ever had: rich and fudgy, served warm with caramel and vanilla ice cream. It was the perfect sweet ending to a perfect dinner.

EPOCH’s outdoor terrace is transformed for the holiday season into an enchanting Holiday Market inspired by the classic European winter markets, complete with cozy heaters, seasonal treats like mulled wine and hot chocolate and artisanal offerings. It is the kind of space you want to linger in before or after dinner, soaking in the lights and the festive buzz.

Festive staycation ending with a Sunday Social Brunch

The next morning, brunch at LANO once again proved that the culinary experience at The Ritz-Carlton, Toronto does not slow down. LANO is known for its coffee, and the cappuccino here is one of the best in Toronto. Its matcha, equally noteworthy, is smooth, rich and perfectly balanced.

Sunday brunch comes with a DJ, creating a lively yet relaxed backdrop that felt just right for holiday weekend vibes. While I sipped on a classic mimosa, the team crafted a festive citrusy mocktail for my son so he could feel part of the celebration too.

We indulged in smoked salmon eggs Benedict with fries, a sourdough cashew mushroom dish that was rich and satisfying, and the espresso covered French toast with pistachios, which was indulgent in every sense. I must also make a note that the poached eggs at LANO were perfect; a detail many places struggle with but here executed with precision.

Your Holiday Plans, Elevated

One thing became clear by the end of our festive staycation: The Ritz-Carlton, Toronto does not just celebrate the holidays. It curates an entire sensory experience and invites you to be a part of it. From the Club Lounge to personalized suites, Toys and Tea, gingerbread-making with your friends or family, and festive dining at TOCA and EPOCH, the experience is layered, intentional and joyful.

Whether you are planning a last-minute staycation, visiting from out of town, or simply stopping in to soak up the holiday spirit without booking a room, this is the place to go. Sometimes the most memorable holiday moments are the ones that happen when you least expect them, and at The Ritz-Carlton, Toronto, the magic is ready and waiting.
