Montreal: where circus dreams soar

August 13, 2024

The circus evokes a sense of thrill, with its dazzling costumes and acts of bravery, but today’s circus has evolved into a medium for beautiful storytelling as well. Montreal has a vibrant circus arts scene, and has earned the title as one of the world’s circus capitals, largely thanks to the city’s deep connection with Cirque du Soleil, which was founded in Montreal in 1984 and has since grown into a global phenomenon.

Whether I’m watching shows at home in Montreal, or while I’m traveling in other cities, there is something uniquely thrilling about the experience that Cirque du Soleil can deliver. I’ve seen over half a dozen Cirque du Soleil shows and each is distinctive in its story.  The innovative blend of acrobatics, storytelling, and live music redefines modern circus and has influenced countless companies worldwide.

Currently, Kurios is playing in the Montreal Old Port until August 25, and trust me, it’s a show you don’t want to miss. There’s something about the way the performers bring magic to life that will leave you with the best feeling. I loved it so much that I had to see it a second time this summer—check out our story on Kurios to see why it captured my heart!

Montreal’s thriving circus community

Montreal is home to a thriving circus arts community, with numerous schools, festivals, and smaller companies contributing to this beautiful, dynamic culture. In Quebec alone, there are over 20 circus companies. The National Circus School (École nationale de cirque) in Montreal, one of the most prestigious circus schools in the world, attracts aspiring artists from across the globe. These young talents come to Montreal to learn from the best, honing their skills in a city that breathes creativity.

Montréal Complètement Cirque: 15th edition

Every July, the city transforms into a circus playground during the annual Montréal Complètement Cirque festival—the first festival in North America dedicated entirely to circus arts. This year’s edition marked 15 years of spectacular performances, turning the city into a canvas of aerial wonders and street performances, as well as a remarkable offering of indoor shows. There’s something magical about walking through Montreal during this festival; it feels like the city itself is alive with wonder.

TOHU: the heart of circus arts and sustainability

One of the highlights of this year’s festival was my first visit to the TOHU in the Saint-Michel district, a cultural hub dedicated to circus arts, community engagement, and environmental sustainability. TOHU’s unique circular performance hall, designed to mimic a traditional circus ring, offers a space where the art of circus truly comes alive. It was here that I had my first experience with Duck Pond by Australia’s Circa—a show that still lingers in my mind.

Duck Pond: a daring retelling

Duck Pond is a fabulous fusion of acrobatics, humour, and inventive storytelling that’s absolutely captivating. It is a modern and daring retelling of the Swan Lake ballet—with several fun twists. Set in a whimsical world where a quirky cast of characters—including a dozen rowdy ducks—navigate life’s ups and downs with a playful sense of absurdity. The performers display impressive physical feats, seamlessly blending traditional circus skills like aerial acts and acrobatics with a distinctly Australian sense of humour. The set design and costumes are beautiful and vibrant. One scene in particular had me on the edge of my seat—a breath-holding act featuring acrobatics performed in…high heels on top of… another performer. The tension was palpable, and I found myself gripping my friend’s hand who joined me until the act concluded safely. In fact, the entire show is a testament to the daring spirit of the circus, but here intense acts are performed without a safety net, leaving you breathless.

What sets Duck Pond apart is its ability to balance these spectacular acts with light-hearted comedy and moments of genuine emotion, making it a memorable and engaging experience that leaves viewers laughing, smirking and certainly in awe.

Montreal’s thriving circus culture is deeply rooted in its history of innovation, community spirit, and strong commitment to the arts. From the groundbreaking performances of Cirque du Soleil to the multifaceted mission of TOHU, the city has created a unique ecosystem where circus arts thrive. Do not miss the opportunity to experience some incredible shows at these great venues.
