1.  How did you meet and how did this collaboration come about?

MIA: We met during our university years through mutual friends and hit if off right away. Eventually, we started talking about the idea of starting our own label. We soon realized that we made a good team both personally and professionally, despite our differing personalities.

At the time, we were both working on other projects. Riccardo was one of the primary accessory designers for Dolce & Gabbana and I was working at Marc Jacobs in New York. Once I moved back to Italy, we decided to focus on the creation of Miryaki.

Funnily enough, we actually made our first collection on a bet to see how it would go. When we entered that collection in a contest and won one of the top prizes, we knew that we were on the right track. It was the push we needed. We are now on our sixth season and thankfully we are growing, but we are always cautiously optimistic.

2. I read that Mia is the mind and Riccardo is the soul of your brand. How do you combine forces when creating your collections?

MIA: Basically, it happens like this: we need to be in the right frame of mind when researching and when we do, the results are always excellent. We’re actually quite lucky, considering our different styles, because we usually find ourselves with similar inspirations on the concept, themes, etc.

RICCARDO: Let’s say we start separately … we each do our research when inspiration hits. Even before we start our research, we have already decided on a theme, so from our research we present each other with our ideas and inspiration on how to expand on that theme.

MIA: Seeing that we travel on very different wavelengths; Riccardo is very dramatic and excessive, in a good way, of course, he loves to push the envelope because he believes in visual impact but I, on the other hand, am the realistic one and it’s up to me to bring him back, because along with wanting our pieces to be beautiful on an aesthetic level, they also have to sell. I must say that even though we have always created within those limits, we always manage to create exactly what we want.

3. How do you start creating your collections? Do you choose your fabrics purely based on your ideas or do you follow the trends and decide from there?

RICCARDO: Both really, because we buy the fabrics we want based on our theme, regardless of the trends, but we also take the trends into consideration. We then dye the fabrics and create the prints that we want, which we do ourselves. Often, we choose textiles and prints that many other designers don’t take into consideration, because they associate them with other areas of the design industry. In doing so, we create something new and unique.

MIA: Basically, we reinterpret these fabrics and turn them into clothing. We did it for the spring/summer 2014 collection, by using netting that is primarily used for accessories; Riccardo had the fabric manipulated, recreated and designed directly into the clothing.

4. So Riccardo, basically you incorporate the accessory right into the garment?

MIA: He can’t help himself!

4. Quindi Riccardo, metti proprio l’accessorio nell’abito?

MIA: Non ne puo’ fare a meno!

5. How was the name of your brand created?

RICCARDO: It’s a combination and play of our names: Mia and Ricky Riccardo, Mia-Ricky = Miryaki. It sounds a little Asian, right? In fact, many have told us this over the years, but it’s simply a mix of our names.

We also decided this past year to rebrand and change the font of our logo to make it look a little more modern.

6. Who are your style icons?

RICCARDO: McQueen! But I mean McQueen, in the time of Alexander McQueen. Then, I would have to say vintage Céline and Chloé and Valentino, especially since the new designers have taken over.

On the historical level though, I must say Dior Couture, because for me Dior Couture encapsulates the history of fashion.

MIA: As for me, I not only have my favourites on the creative level but also at the business level. Established brands, such as Chanel, which has become an empire, also has great history. Stylistically, I have to agree with Riccardo, vintage Céline and Chloé have become some of my favourite landmark designers. Oh, and let’s not forget Marni, they’re up there too.

7. What’s next for Miryaki?

MIA: We want to make 31! We hope to get there this!

7. Cosa vedi nel futuro di Miryaki?

MIA: Ci manca quel 31! …e speriamo questa stagione di farcela!

8. What does it mean to make 31?

RICCARDO: It’s an Italian expression … making 30 is like saying, you’ve made it, you’ve graduated and when they say you made 31 it means you’ve graduated with honours, and you’ve outdone yourself!
