The mid-winter chill has many of us bundling rather than beaching, but it’s never too soon to review this year’s swimwear trends or test them out on a tropical vacation.

Victoria’s Secret recently launched its Swim 2013 Collection, which coincided with the first Victoria’s Secret Swim Catalogue of the year. Shot by photographer Russell James, the campaign has a glamorous, old-Hollywood feel. With the sunny beaches of Turks and Caicos and Miami as backdrops, the campaign is nothing short of dazzling.

The company chose supermodel Candice Swanepoel for the cover and has launched the Angels & Artists video series in support of the catalogue’s release. The first video, Bikinis and Bruno Mars, features swim footage of Swanepoel and model Doutzen Kroes, set to Bruno Mars’ hit Locked Out of Heaven. With three more catalogues to be released during 2013, VS fans will have no shortage of beachwear inspiration this year.

From retro push-up bandeau bikinis to poolside looks with an opulent touch, we’ve rounded up a few of our favourite swimwear trends for the season.

1.      Embellishments

Bejewelled swimwear is making a bold impact. Stand-out looks include stone-encrusted bikini tops, metallic finishes and tasteful hardware details. The more wearable version of this trend can be seen in pieces with dainty crystal embellishments and subtly bejewelled bandeau tops.

2.      Criss-crosses and ties

In keeping with the more-is-more trend in swimwear, criss-cross bikini bottoms and extra ties are in full swing. Along with bikini bottom side-ties, many pieces from Victoria’s Secret Swim Collection feature delicate front bows and brightly coloured ties. Step it up a notch with criss-cross accents to make a sophisticated and feminine statement while lounging poolside.

Fall in love with swimwear this year; there are many great options to choose from.

3.      Ruffles

Frills may seem junior in concept, but they can help create a youthful and fun beach look. For those seeking to enhance their curves, strategically placed ruffles can do the trick. From the Beach Sexy Stripe Cheeky Hipkini Bottom to the Beach Sexy Ruffle Push-up Triangle Top, Victoria’s Secret is all about playful and feminine frills this season.

4.      Colourful prints

Colour and fun prints are mainstays in swimwear, but this year these trends are being taken to a whole new level with saturated hues and boldly patterned bikinis. Animal prints, stripes, polka dots and tropical styles are especially fashionable. Many of the bikinis in the collection also combine bejewelled embellishments with vibrant, coloured prints.

5.      Bandeau bikinis

The bandeau bikini is making a comeback. While some may shy away from strapless swimwear, this season’s push-up bandeaus take the look to a more mature level. Ruching and criss-cross shapes are reminiscent of the 1950s, which gives this trend a charming, old Hollywood touch.
