Tobias Lindholm’s first English-language film set in the U.S. — The Good Nurse — premiered at TIFF last month. The screenplay by Krysty Wilson-Cairns is adapted from a well-known book, The Good Nurse: A True Story of Medicine, Madness and Murder. Many members of the cast flew in for the premiere and participated in several related screenings and events. We have the full story.

The Film

Academy Award winners Eddie Redmayne and Jessica Chastain play the lead roles in this nail-biting drama thriller. Undoubtedly, they both deliver some of the best performances of their careers, and it won’t be surprising if they get an Oscar nod (or win) in 2023.

Redmayne stuns in his powerful portrayal of serial killer Charles Cullen. The actor’s posture, mannerisms and gaze are all going to send chills down your spine. There is a strong element of voyeurism throughout the film, which adds to the creepiness factor — even in scenes where Cullen is absent, we can feel his presence. It’s all in the atmosphere Redmayne creates throughout. The way he walks or slouches, the pauses he takes while speaking softly — the level of discomfort escalates as the movie progresses. In the last few scenes, when the film hits the climax, Redmayne’s performance is Oscar-worthy.

Chastain’s portrayal of Amy Loughren, who is a struggling single mother with health issues, is also solid. Loughren is caught between the demands of her job and family, while simultaneously dealing with the fears that her friend Charlie is up to no good.

The film’s title itself is fascinating. At first, it seems that The Good Nurse is Cullen who is always kind and friendly, taking care of Loughren and eager to help her family. But as the story progresses, it becomes clear that it’s Loughren who has to make the final call: does she stay quiet for the sake of her family and her own well-being, or does she speak up and report Cullen — and risk everything? Is Loughren going to be The Good Nurse?
