Sexy slits and tiny waists: Cannes Film Festival 2017

June 7, 2017

The glitz, glamour and international star power have once again left their mark on France, as the 70th Cannes Film Festival wrapped up in late May.

With the opening and closing ceremonies hosted by Monica Bellucci and the jury—which included Jessica Chastain, Fan Bingbing and Will Smith—led by this year’s president, Pedro Almodovar, there was no shortage of favourite fashion moments to choose from.

FAJO has been watching closely and keeping track of the trends that appeared on this year’s Red Carpet, picking some of our favourite looks. And what have we learned, but have always known? Glamour at any age is beautiful!

Hair styles

The actresses seem to have taken a page out of the French Riviera this year, with many opting for simple chic, sleek and au natural hair rather than the more extravagant Hollywood glamourous updos.

Whether it was simple straight hair, soft curls or a nice chignon—all of the hair styles seemed effortless. It will be interesting to see if this sticks around until next year’s Red Carpet season.

Drama, drama, drama

Though the hair may have been simple, the actresses were not shy to bring drama to some of the dresses. For example, actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan floated up the steps to the theatre in a light blue dress looking positively Disney-like, and even Elle Fanning’s delicate angelic figure was on full display in her Vivienne Westwood number.

Celebrities also brought other dramatic touches, such as trains or accents (think large bows and ruffles).

Classic silhouettes, sheer touches

With a number of premieres and Red Carpet appearances, many actresses opted to follow more than one trend this year. But we must never forget the power of the classic mermaid or column silhouettes—a simple elegance.

Some of these looks were elevated to whole new levels of “sexy” with sheer fabrics and panels. See how Jessica Chastain and Julianne Moore wore these trends.

High slits and low cuts

Low cuts and thigh-high slits were another big trend, and made more than one appearance.

Everyone from Uma Thurman to Susan Sarandon and Bella Hadid brought their sexy a-game by showing more than a little leg or shoulders.

Expect to see these off-the-shoulder, deep Vs and thigh-high slits this season.
