On the runways of Rome: AltaRomAltaModa 2014

February 14, 2014

Couture… one of the oldest crafts in the world, and yet, watching this craft come to life on the runway, year after year and season after season, never gets old. The craft is perpetually reinvented by fresh-faced designers, and this year’s AltaRomAltaModa carried on in the same fashion.

Keeping with tradition, AltaRoma 2014 brought history and modernity together and all of it framed by the familiar walls of the Complesso Monumentale Santo Spirito in Sassia, Rome. Within those historical walls, you could find couture houses — such as Sarli, Curiel and Balestra — and rising stars like Esme Vie, Greta Boldini and Quattromani. This year also brought a new wing, so to speak, to the AltaRoma four-day fashion fanfare: the first annual International Fashion, Style and Beauty Film Festival, which took place at the 2,000-year-old Tempio di Adriano.

WhoIsOnNext? We’ll tell who — six up-and-coming fashion stars who sent their designs sauntering down the runway hoping to impress the scouts of this coveted contest, organized by AltaRoma and Vogue Italia. This year’s winner: Austrian-born, Milan-raised Arthur Arbesser, who won over the judges with his black-and-white knits and streamlined jackets.

Regardless of vintage, AltaRoma designers are trendsetters. Sarli Couture’s mostly muted flowy and tailored dresses can hang in your closet next to newcomer Comeforbreakfast’s blousons and cropped pants. Orange, greys and blues, transparent shirts and silkscreen prints — there is room for every trend and they can live in perfect harmony. There’s no competition, just fine threads. Old and new, together these couturiers have one thing in common: they make great clothes and create trends that stand the test of time.

Between the debut of the fashion film festival, runways dedicated to historic couturiers and new generations of designers — all with the ancient Roman ruins as the backdrop — AltaRoma never looked this good.
