The 70s continue to inspire, as the bohemian look effortlessly makes its way back into our wardrobe this fall, with its earthy colours and free-spirited vibe. Look out for faux-fur coats in shorter and longer styles to keep you warm as the weather gets chillier.

Trying to create volume on a narrow upper-body? Pair a cute floral dress with a faux-fur gilet and a skinny belt, accentuating the waist (your summer’s favourite maxi dress would also work well). Complete the boho look with lace-up ankle boots, a satchel bag and a wide-brimmed hat.

Get adventurous by mixing textures and clashing prints, but avoid too many layers and keep the colour combination simple (no more than three to four). Make sure to pick colours that flatter your complexion.

We’re shamelessly borrowing from the boys (again), as sleek masculine tailoring remains a big trend this fall. The androgynous look works particularly well for the office with clean cut lines and high-contrast colour combinations, creating a silhouette that instantly means business.

The high-waisted ankle-grazing trousers, silk blouse and high-shine heeled brogues are great staples for your work wardrobe and play up the masculine/feminine vibe. The cropped jacket/high waisted pants combo should be avoided at all costs if you have a long legs/short torso body type.

Evening formal

Vibrant colours and ultra-saturated hues are what it’s all about this season, and jewels add to the “new black” for formal evening wear.

Create a luxurious look by pairing complementary shades of the same hue. For maximum impact, wear emerald, ruby, sapphire, garnet, magenta or amethyst head-to-toe.

Deep, rich colours are a fabulous choice if you have darker skin or high-contrast colouring, including dark hair, sparkly eyes and pale skin. They could, however, overpower those with fairer colouring. Softer versions of the same hues are suggested for people who don’t have a high contrast in their natural colouring. As an example, instead of going for hot pink, try raspberry, which is a tad softer.

Evening semi-formal

A variation of this year’s ultra-saturated colour trend is colour-blocking multiple hues in one single garment. For a harmonious look, accessorize with colours in the same family. Warmer tones, such as orange, brown and cream, will look fantastic if you have a warm skin undertone.

To keep it simple, pair the look with neutral-toned shoes, or match them to the outfit. Pleated dresses flatter most body types with vertical lines that have a slimming effect. Pleats have been a trend throughout the year, as they were already a key feature in the spring/summer collections (sheer pleated dresses in crêpe, silk in particular). In the evening, a pleated dress works particularly well for a 1970s revival spin.
