Anita Clarke; I want – I got

Anita Clarke.

Tell us about your first blog post. June 21, 2005. It was a way to record things that I saw on the Internet and liked, in a visual format. First few posts were about earphones, iPod, random kitchen things…a really cool gas fireplace.

How did your blogging career grow? I did my own thing for a year, not paying attention to anything. I had friends that were working in the industry, so I had some insight into how things went on, but I wasn’t fully immersed in it. I was like a fan from the outside, not an insider. I wrote for BlogTO for three years, and on the side wrote my blog, which was getting popular. In 2009, I was involved in the blogger window project for Holt Renfrew, where I created a window display. That and BlogTO were definitely key building blocks to where I ended up going. I don’t want to stop yet.

Who is your fashion icon? Grace Jones. Katharine Hepburn. My friends. Daphne Guinness. Cate Blanchett. Kate Winslet

Describe your style in one word. Schizophrenic.

What is your favourite store anywhere in the world? The Prada store on Rodeo Drive in L.A.

Who is your favourite Canadian designer? Jeremy Laing. Before I ever met Jeremy, I was in awe of his shapes. Everything he does connects with what I like to wear or what I’d like to look like dressed in his garments. I was so star struck when I met him – real fan girl moment. I like when you can’t even describe it. It’s just a strong feeling I have for his clothing and his kind of aesthetic.

If you were reborn who would you be? Hopefully me again, because it’s been a good ride already! Or someone in the 20s.

What is the craziest fashion-related thing you’ve ever done? This year I bought a Mark Fast bodysuit that had cut-outs going up the side. [I wore it to] The Power Plant’s Power Ball. People were like “what the hell?” There was such a ruckus about it! I’ve always wanted a cat suit, and I wanted to be a spectacle. I usually am not.

If you had to wear one thing for a whole year what would it be? It would be a shift dress. It’s easy for work and I can dress it up. Like The Uniform Project.

What are your favourite 10 items in your closet? Dolce Vita booties, Dean Davidson ring, Jeremy Laing jacket, JUMA top, Banana Republic pants, Anize bracelet, Chan Luu bracelet, Links of London bracelet, Hermes bracelet, Eliza Kozurno earrings, Alexander Wang sunglasses.
