Aethos Hotel Milano: home of Italy’s best Negroni

January 31, 2024
Almost discreetly hidden behind heavy black metal gates in an unmarked facade, this hotel is packaged as a hidden gem awaiting discovery and adventure. Situated just a 20-minute walk from the Duomo in the centre of Milan and next to the Naviglio Grande Canal, Aethos Milan is fabulously located in the fashion capital’s most popular nightlife district.

Eclectic boutique hotel living at its finest

Aethos Milan (formerly known as “The Yard”) is a special jewel of a boutique hotel. The Milanese property was founded by Alessandro Mario Cesario, an avid antique collector, art enthusiast and global traveler, and subsequently purchased by the Aethos chain in 2021. Alessandro’s passion for travel and love of eclectic memorabilia live on in every corner of this unique and passion-driven, somewhat-eccentric establishment. The hotel has an essence that makes you feel as though the world has paused with an astounding collection of vintage Louis Vuitton leather travel trunks, art pieces and period furniture: stunning accents proving testament to Alessandro’s passion for travel. As you nestle into one of the countless seating areas of this special corner of Milan, history pours into your soul and awakens thoughts of a kinder time.

The hotel boasts 32 wondrous rooms, each of which is uniquely designed and adorned with fabulous furnishings from around the globe, celebrating notably masculine themes of the day, from safari to rugby, destined to awaken the senses of the weary traveler. The lobby is a breathtaking combination of interesting and sinfully comfortable velvet wingback chairs, Chesterfield buttoned leather sofas, mahogany tables, and numerous seating areas styled with vintage furniture that deviates from the minimalistic nature of contemporary Italian design. Aethos Milan is a celebration of the late 1800s style. If the artifacts could talk, the conversations would be filled with tales of luxurious oceanic and Orient Express rail expeditions of yesteryear.

If you have the pleasure of visiting this establishment, be sure to visit our friend Frederico at the bar, for Italy’s finest Negroni. When you sit there and gently sip on one of their world-famous Negronis, there is a sense that time has surely stopped.

Aethos Milano’s bartender Frederico’s signature Negroni cocktail recipe.

1. Pour over ice made with “Aqua Naturalle” (still water)

2. Equal parts of :

•Gin

•Campari

•Sweet vermouth

3. Gently stir and garnish with orange peel. Drink & enjoy.

4. Salute!

Note: The story of the Negroni begins at the Caffè Casoni in Florence in 1919. History is varied on the origins of the Negroni but, as lore has it, the cocktail was invented by Count Camillo Negroni, a colourful Italian adventurer of the 1800s befitting of this vintage-inspired hotel.
