London Fashion Week, autumn/winter 2016

March 10, 2016

Last month, we attended the autumn/winter fashion event circuits during London Fashion Week. LFW was held at Brewer Street Car Park for the second time as the central venue, which had the Designer Showrooms on display and acted as the British Fashion Council’s main show space.

We headed a bit outside of the central hub to venues across the city, including events and shows at Somerset House, Le Meridien Hotel, One Marylebone and The Institute of Contemporary Arts.

Fashion Utopias International Fashion Showcase launch party

To kick off the week, I attended Fashion Utopias International Fashion Showcase 2016 launch party at the Somerset House.

The exhibition covered five continents and featured designers across 25 countries, as diverse as Korea, Guatemala, Egypt and Nigeria.

During the launch event there was a bar, DJ and snacks on offer, while guests were able to browse around different rooms with interesting fashion installations. They were each individual and inspired by history and culture; decorated in response to the utopia theme and each designer’s country of origin.

Paul Costelloe’s runway show

I also got the pleasure of attending Paul Costelloe’s fashion show again, which was held at Le Meridien hotel in Piccadilly. His latest autumn/winter 2016 collection takes a step away from the 60s and focuses on a modern-day female, with power dressing and supreme tailoring.

From sharp, oversized military coats in warm red checks to the brand’s trademark babydoll dresses with a twist, this was another great collection.

Belstaff x Liv Tyler fashion presentation

One of my favourite events this season was the Belstaff Polar Pioneer & the Liv Tyler Capsule Collection at One Marylebone.

The Polar Pioneer line is a mix of polar and moto inspirations, influenced by wintry landscapes, while keeping Belstaff’s signature biker heritage with leather alongside parkas, shearling coats and neutral wools.

Not only did we get to walk around the presentation taking us through a winter expedition, but we also got to see the gorgeous Liv Tyler who was in attendance.

Sid Neigum’s DHL Exported show

We have featured Sid’s work in FAJO many times before (here is our first story on him), so I was thrilled to support this Canadian talen at DHL Exported – a program for fashion designers established in their local market, who are looking to further expand their brand across international borders.

Our fellow Toronto-ian debuted his latest womenswear collection with a live model presentation at The Institute of Contemporary Arts. His conceptual designs, described as maximal and minimal, felt contemporary and wearable.

I loved the sculptural shapes, layers, cutouts and drapes of his pieces, featured in black, white and camel colours. He is, indeed, a fashion mathematician, and I was proud to associate his talent with Canada.

As always, London didn’t disappoint, showcasing unique style on and off the runway.
