Met Gala 2016: Manus x Machina

May 2, 2016

It’s here —the first Monday in May.

Tonight is the Met Gala, also known as one of the most popular days on the fashion calendar.

The 2016 theme of this annual event is focused around The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s latest exhibit — Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology. The exhibit will run from May 5 to Aug.14 and will explore how fashion designers are reconciling the handmade and the machine-made in the creation of haute couture and avant-garde ready-to-wear.

Think of it as time travel in fashion. With over 150 ensembles, the exhibit will feature pieces from the early 20th century to present time. It will also “address the founding of haute couture in the 19th century, when the sewing machine was invented, and the emergence of a distinction between the hand (manus) and the machine (machina) at the onset of mass production.”

In the meantime, all eyes are on the Red Carpet tonight, where some of Hollywood’s biggest stars are shining (literally, in some cases) in a variety of designer gowns and tuxedos.

As always, the fashion elite has gathered at the iconic The Mark Hotel, less than a block away from Central Park, where they mingled and chatted before heading out to the Gala. Who wore it best? Here are some of our favourite looks.
