Beautylicious 2016

October 25, 2016

It’s the most wonderful time of the year: it’s Beautylicious 2016! This is the fourth consecutive time I am covering this annual event and it remains one of my all-time favourites.

You can’t go wrong when one of the most stylish neighbourhoods in the city hosts something like this, so many thanks to the Bloor-Yorkville BIA for organizing it and keeping the tradition alive.

The only event of its kind in Canada, Beautylicious offers prix fixe prices on hair, spa, skin and health and wellness service packages for women and men. Over 50 businesses in the neighbourhood are participating this year. The event is running from October 20 until October 30, so you don’t want to miss it!

As always, I chose two businesses to review for my story this year: one focused on beauty and one focused on health/wellness.

Salon Davachi

I have heard many great things about Salon Davachi and two of our Editors at FAJO had actually attended the opening party of the salon last year, so I was looking forward to experiencing it myself.

Situated on the peaceful and scenic Scollard street in Yorkville, the salon has a highly creative décor. Colourful paintings fill its walls, and everything is decorated with much taste and elegance.

Félor Davachi – the owner of the salon – has done an incredible job at creating a truly luxury experience in the heart of Toronto. This is a very exclusive salon and I have never seen this level of exceptional service anywhere else in the city.

I really liked Félor’s approach to our makeover too. I wanted to dye my hair back to a dark colour, and she immediately started to brainstorm how we can make my new look elegant and classic. “We are going to make the perfect you,” she said. I liked that because we weren’t going to replicate a look of someone else; instead, we were going to modify my look.

My new look, created by Félor Davachi.

During my experience, Félor coloured, cut and gave a treatment to my hair. She used a combination of Mask for Beautiful Colour & Gold Lust Repair Mask (both by Oribe). The styling products used were also by Oribe. She started with a Royal Blow Out spray followed by the Split End Mender. After the blow out, Félor finished off my hair with the Gold Lust Nourishing Hair Oil (Oribe has a nickname for it: Liquid Gold). Félor was a true example of hairstyling excellence. My hair was now sleek, shiny and stylish; it was also much healthier than before.

Several hours flew by very quickly. I chatted with Félor, Emily, Lily and Antoinette. The team at Salon Davachi was extremely friendly and very stylish. It felt like a fun ladies’ night out in the middle of a day – spent over great conversation, lattes and snacks. At one point, Félor suggested that we should thread my eyebrows and once again – she did an amazing job at perfecting my own eyebrows as opposed to giving me a look of a celebrity or following a trend. I had a great time here and I will be sure to come back again!

Rosedale Wellness Centre

I’ve had a very stressful couple of months, so I was extremely looking forward to this experience. I had booked a one-hour massage at the Rosedale Wellness Centre. Located just east of Yonge and Bloor, it is easily accessible and right in the heart of midtown Toronto.

The centre has a trendy and very sleek décor. I was greeted by the friendly Andrea when I arrived, and shortly after I was introduced to my massage therapist: Xiulan (Judy) Mei.

Judy was a true expert. I have a lot of massages regularly, but what really stood out for me during this experience was that she immediately asked me about my “problem areas” and what I wanted the session to focus on. She listened carefully and for the next hour focused specifically and only on these areas. I was truly grateful for that, as it made a huge difference not only in my experience but also in my overall wellness. One hour generated miraculous results!

Because of my lifestyle of constantly sitting and writing, I have a lot of tension in my upper back and shoulders. When I get stressed, these areas get even more tense and more aggravated. Needless to say, when I arrived at the session, I was in a lot of pain.

Judy did a spectacular job at easing the pain and the tension in my muscles. She was also very attentive to me throughout the process and frequently asked if the pressure was right or offered me water.

The session was exceptional. I left feeling completely rejuvenated and very energized. Judy was a fantastic massage therapist and I will be sure to come back again!
