1. How did Leda Otto come about?

Marta: We met through my partner and Simona’s husband, and immediately connected. We realized that we both had a strong passion for everything fashion and so we started going to Milan fashion shows, talking on the train rides and getting to know one another. Just for fun, we decided to try and design something for ourselves. After realizing that we didn’t want to do this for fun anymore, we decided to leave our old jobs and jump into this adventure!

Com’ é nato Leda Otto?

Marta: Ci siamo conosciute tramite i nostri mariti/compagni e abbiamo subito legato.

2. What challenges did you face at the beginning of your adventure?

Marta: More than anything, the biggest challenge was the production. We took nearly a year to produce the first collection. It was difficult to find the right people who could make our product. The brass material, which we primarily use, is not as common as gold and silver, and our designs were much larger than what the local producers were used to. It was all very new to them. Another big challenge was finding people who believed in us and our idea, without holding it against us that we were two young women. However, in the end, after so many obstacles and having paid three times what we pay now to make our product, we finally found a great team of young creative people who wanted to grow with us and take on a new challenge!

Quali sfide avete dovuto affrontare all’inizio della vostra avventura?

3. What inspired you to make these unique designs?

Marta/Simona: It all started from our love of travelling. It was actually seeing the aerial view of a building from the plane that inspired the idea. We initially thought of designing our pieces based on buildings viewed from above, and then that slowly evolved into the idea of reproducing the architectural blueprints of the most famous buildings in the world. Given the number of beautiful buildings out there, we have lots of options, so it gives us the opportunity to design our favourites!

4. Have you ever visited the buildings that you designed into jewelry pieces?

Simona: Yes, we have visited many of them. Other than what we have actually visited, we find much of our inspiration and material through our Internet searches and in architecture books. There are some great buildings that we can design, but when rendered in metal they lose their beauty. So this leads us to make choices and design pieces from the blueprints that deliver just as gorgeous in metal as they do on paper.

5. What is the best compliment you’ve ever received?

Simona: It was when a perfect stranger stopped us on the street and said to me, ‘That necklace you are wearing, it looks like…but no, maybe I’m wrong … it looks like a Leda Otto!’ First of all, this particular necklace was from the new collection and had yet to be published anywhere, so there is no way she could have seen it. But she, nonetheless, recognized the style of Leda Otto as if she had recognized a well-known brand like Gucci. It was a huge compliment! Ironically, even though we have received many compliments from people in the industry, being complimented and having our work recognized by a non-industry person honestly left me a little stunned!

6. How important is it for you to have the Made in Italy label?

Simona: Very important. In my opinion, it gives our designs great added value and it is especially appreciated abroad. We have many customers around the world who, whenever they buy our pieces, consistently get the quality and craftsmanship of a Made in Italy product. It is particularly appreciated because our jewelry is an exclusive product and not mass-produced. This pushes us to continue to create high-quality pieces because today’s customer is much more demanding and knowledgeable. Thanks to the Internet, the average consumer now has the tools to recognize an original product with much more ease than ever before.

Simona: Tanto.

7. Do you want to enter the North American market?

Marta: Hopefully, yes! We’d love to. In fact, we are thinking about participating in an industry trade show in North America, because seeing that it is a difficult market to get into we would like to try and see what the feedback would be. We currently have two stores in the U.S. that sell Leda Otto, one in Palm Beach and the other in San Diego. At the recent trade show in Paris, we met many Americans who saw our product and we got excellent feedback. So yes, we are really interested, partly because so far we have always focused on Europe, but now we believe it is important to expand into new markets. North America and Asia are next on our list.

Avete intenzione di entrare nel mercato Nord-Americano?

Marta: Magari! Ci piacerebbe molto.

A busy year lies ahead for the two designers.

8. Would entering the North American market influence the designs of future collections?

Marta: Definitely! Mainly because North American style is a little different from ours, so we would like to create something new for that consumer. The fact that we are planning to attend a trade show in North America has already influenced us, and we are already thinking of new designs targeting this market.

9. What famous buildings do you dream of recreating for future collections?

Simona: We have designed them all so far! In fact, the ones we have been dreaming of doing are being made as we speak for the next collection. In this new collection, we focused more on modern architecture and contemporary art. Until now, all the jewelry we designed represented historic buildings, otherwise related to the church and pagan art, but now we are moving towards something more linked to the future.

Simona: Li stiamo realizzando tutti!

10. Where do you find your inspiration and how do you decide the style of a new collection?

Simona: Primarily art. We love art so much that while we were in Florence for the Pitti fair, we went to see a ’30s-inspired art exhibit and enjoyed that more than the fair. We also love the art deco era and everything that is geometrical. This has always heavily influenced us and inspired our designs.

We do a lot of research before a new collection. Between all the trends presented at the fairs and trade shows and all of our own research, we collect it all, taking into consideration the upcoming trends as we do want to follow them, and from there choose the building blueprint and materials that we will use for the next collection. The blueprint we choose then creates the theme and mood of the entire jewelry collection.

Simona: In primis l’arte.

11. What’s in Leda Otto’s future?

Marta/Simona: Sheer panic! Mainly because, for the first time ever, we are late with the next Leda Otto collection. The delay is due to the fact that we were chosen as designers for an American brand called Diamonique, which produces synthetic diamonds. We are working with them to create a new collection that will be sold on QVC Italy.

We are also preparing to participate in the next edition of the Who Is On Next competition sponsored by AltaRoma and Vogue Italy because, for the first time ever, they are allowing jewelry designers to participate. We are very busy right now, but we’re going to make it!

12. How would you define success?

Marta/Simona: Growth is success. Entering new markets, creating new things and going further with our brand equals success for us!
