Ottawa and Gatineau fashion lovers gathered at the posh Hilton Lac Leamy for Grande Première 2012, where Richard Robinson showcased his latest collections alongside the work of his students.

The public event gathered well-known names from the region, including Angie Sakla-Seymour, Sid Cratzbarg, Janet Wilson and Carol Anne Meehan. Supportive family and friends were also in attendance to cheer for the current and graduating students of the Richard Robinson Academy of Fashion Design.

The show began with Robinson’s adorable grandchildren walking down the white runway to booming dubstep music. The girls had black and white polka dresses with matching sun hats, while the boys wore striped shirts with black trousers.

Both the men and women’s collections had a futuristic feel. The shimmer of silver buckles and grommets, along with leather detailing, were the accents on his all-black collections. The women’s designs were symmetrical, fitted and refined. They were the little black dresses of the future. The men’s collection had asymmetrical elements to suit jackets along with plenty of buckles and straps. The finishing piece was a dazzling women’s silver trench coat with a matching crop-top and miniskirt underneath.

Student collections

The student designs greatly varied in style and colour palette. On point with this year’s sailor trend, several had various nautical elements: sailboat prints, navy stripes and even pirate-inspired clothing. Black was also a favoured colour, with rose and pink a close second. There was the occasional splash of colourful patterned fabric, such as Layla Al-Salmi and Jennyfer Djamboleka’s collections, which both had lovely incorporations of prints.

There was also an abundance of silk, satin, lace and applique. Other notable trends were a gothic flare – with hoods, velvet and corsets that lace up with chains – and pieces that glittered – sequins and crystals.

A standout was a lingerie collection by Brittany Boucher which had a beautiful mix of cream and black, with delicate lace, ribbon and fringe.

Miriam Giroux’s designs, including a stunning floor-length lace black dress, caught the attention of the judging panel that awarded her the title of Designer of the Year.

The Couturier of the Year was Stephanie Ross, who had a cohesive black collection consisting of fitted bustiers, ruffles, brocade and sheer fabrics, all accessorised with spike-covered clutches.
