Allergy season: beauty tips from Chantel Guertin

August 7, 2020

Just when you thought you were done with the allergy season and everything has already bloomed, here comes a whole new set of allergens in the summer. We’re talking pollen, mold, freshly cut grass and various weeds. After being confined indoors for several months during the coronavirus pandemic, the summer should be spent laying on the beach, jumping in the pool and enjoying the beautiful outdoors. Given that masks are also typically required indoors across Canada and in most other parts of the world, dealing with allergy symptoms, runny eyes and nose, and ruined makeup can be difficult.

That’s why this month we teamed up with REACTINE® and their beauty expert, Chantel Guertin, to discuss her favourite beauty tips and tricks that, alongside REACTINE®, will help relieve seasonal allergy symptoms!

Allergy season is upon us. What are some of your go-to tricks to battle itchy skin and watery eyes?

There’s nothing worse than itchy skin in the summer, when you want to be showing your skin and be glowy! I try to keep my skin really well-hydrated by having a moisturizer on hand – in the kitchen, my bedroom, the bathroom, my purse. For watery eyes, I make sure I wear waterproof eyeliner and mascara, so that even if my eyes do water, I can quickly touch myself up. And I always make sure to take a REACTINE® Rapid Dissolve in the morning to get me through the day.

Puffy eyes are a girl’s worst nightmare. What do you recommend women do to help alleviate some of the swelling, while they wait for REACTINE®’s effects to kick in?

In the morning, while I’m drinking coffee, I apply a guasha (rose quartz crystal) under my eyes to de-puff them. I keep it in the freezer so it’s ready to go when I need it. The cooling effect calms the puffy skin and it’s a great wake-up companion to my coffee, too! You can also keep your eye cream or sleep mask in the freezer. The chilled effect of any of these items feels so good on puffy skin.

Tell us about your journey with REACTINE®.

I began taking REACTINE® a few months ago. Funnily enough, it was only a few weeks earlier that I had realized I had allergies! For years, while golfing, playing tennis, just getting outdoors, I would suffer from itchy skin, watery eyes and a runny nose, and I just never considered seasonal allergies. REACTINE® has been a great way for me to go about my day without worrying about a sudden runny nose or itchy eyes.

Are there any special techniques that you recommend when applying makeup during allergy season? Anything our readers should stay away from?

A great tip I learned from a makeup artist is to apply your eye makeup first, before anything else. Then, if you make a mistake or your eyes water, you can fix your eye makeup before applying foundation, concealer, powder, etc. And make sure to use waterproof makeup, so you don’t have to reapply throughout the day.

Do you have any tips on how our readers can combat the red nose look while waiting for REACTINE® to alleviate their symptoms?

No one wants a red nose. Using a waterproof concealer on any redness will mean even if you must blow your nose, the concealer should stay put. I also like to use an SPF powder around the nose in warmer months – that way I can cover any redness and get SPF protection that might have come off from using a tissue.

For those of our readers who don’t like to wear makeup, do you have any tips on how they can manage their appearance?

An easy way for people to combat puffiness under the eyes in the morning without makeup is to hold a cold spoon to the eyes. For redness, you can look to using a redness-reducing face cream.

What are the three tools that our readers should always have handy if they are suffering from seasonal allergies?

  1. Always have a chilled tool on hand to reduce puffiness: guasha, spoon, eye mask, sheet mask.
  2. Waterproof makeup
  3. REACTINE® Rapid Dissolve

Prevention is the key to success. Are there any suggestions that you can give to our readers on how they can prepare for an outing should they be expecting a day outdoors?

Take a REACTINE® Rapid Dissolve in the morning, pack a bag with some of the essentials mentioned above, and go out knowing you’re prepared!
