Elegantly at home with Smyth

June 8, 2017

Tribeca is, undoubtedly, one of the most creative parts of New York City with a community of celebrities, families, tourists and professionals from the fashion, finance and media industries. Home to the renowned Tribeca Film Festival, this high-end neighbourhood in Manhattan has its name origins in the syllabic abbreviation of “TRIangle BElow CAnal Street”. The “triangle”—or, to be precise, trapezoid—is bounded by Canal Street, West Street, Broadway, and either Chambers, Vesey or Murray streets.

Comfortably nestled in the heart of this stylish part of 212 is a home-away-from-home for city’s visitors: Smyth, a Thompson Hotel. As the name implies, t trendy property at 85 West Broadway is part of the Thompson Hotels’ luxurious chain.

The boutique 14-story hotel features 100 newly renovated guestrooms and suites by Gachot Studios. Soho-based Gachot was founded by John and Christine Gachot, known for their work on New York City’s Acme restaurant, The Royal Palms Shuffleboard Club and The Sterling Mason residences. With simplicity, elegance and acute attention to detail, Gachot worked closely with hotel management and local owners at Tribeca Associates to carefully reinvent the existing architecture and transform the ground floor of Smyth into a collection of intimate spaces for engaging conversations.

Smyth embodies Tribeca’s vibrant history, passion for the arts and contemporary lifestyle. At the crossroads of chic SoHo boutiques and the newly transformed Lower Manhattan, the property welcomes trendsetters to discreetly relax or be part of the scene. Smyth is located between New York City’s Financial District, SoHo and the West Village, so it’s a stone’s throw away from Michelin-starred restaurants, art galleries, shopping and theatres. If you prefer to relax and stay on-site, the property also features Little Park—a seasonally inspired restaurant by James Beard award-winning chef Andrew Carmellini; Evening Bar—a high-end hand-crafted cocktail lounge; and several artistic living spaces.

Justin Kellerman, Smyth’s general manager, says that the reason the name of the property has a “Y” in it is because there is a park located across from the hotel that is shaped like the letter “Y”.

“All of our hotels embody the cities and neighborhoods in which they are located, but Smyth’s design, service and overall ambiance truly reflect what Tribeca is,” he says, adding that if he had to describe the property in three words, they would be “mid-century, modern and luxury.”

Smyth offers guests thoughtful, luxury amenities with twice-daily housekeeping services, bottled water at turn-down and complimentary wi-fi. The décor inside all rooms is elegant, luxurious and minimalistic, with a focus on neutral tones and wooden accents. Design elements feature a lot of curves, reflected in the items placed inside each room (e.g. the shape of the lamps), as well as inside the bathroom (e.g. the shape of the sink).

Guests can expect striking views of New York’s architecture and the hustle-and-bustle of the city that never sleeps. As the day goes by and the sun sets in the evening, its rays reflect on the colourful glass buildings, while yellow taxis rush to their next destination on the streets below.

Smyth perfectly captures the uniqueness and creativity of America’s largest and most fascinating city.
