Meet me at The Luxus

October 11, 2017

On the eastern tip of the Avalon Peninsula on the island of Newfoundland, sits a vibrant, friendly and very memorable city of St. John’s. The core of the city is home to hundreds of small buildings that sit neatly side by side and feature every bright colour one could think of.

The downtown area is the cultural hub of St. John’s and a major tourist destination in Newfoundland and Labrador and Atlantic Canada. Water Street and Duckworth Street are known for their brightly coloured low-rise heritage buildings, housing numerous tourist shops, clothing boutiques and restaurants. Meanwhile, George Street is well-known for the city’s nightlife, hosting numerous annual festivals including the George Street Festival in August and the Mardi Gras Festival in October. The street can be credited with kick-starting careers of many musical acts and is busy nearly every night of the week.

The LSPU Hall is home to the Resource Centre for the Arts. The “Hall” hosts a vibrant and diverse art community and is regarded as the backbone of artistic infrastructure and development. The careers of many well-known Newfoundland artists were launched there, including Rick Mercer, Mary Walsh, Cathy Jones, Andy Jones and Greg Thomey. Another key attraction is the Provincial Museum of Newfoundland and Labrador. In 2005, the museum, along with the Art Gallery of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Provincial Archives of Newfoundland and Labrador, moved into The Rooms. The Rooms is a wonderful cultural facility, and absolutely worth checking out.

Walking in St.John’s is highly recommended and very easy, so finding a perfect place to stay is essential if you want to get the most out of this city. So, it was an easy choice to make, when we discovered The Luxus Boutique Hotel. Located literally across the street from one of the best restaurants in the city (the upscale Raymonds), the Luxus is a one-minute walk to St. Lawrence River. The property is home to just six rooms, but this isn’t your regular kind of luxury experience: this is a laidback, comfortable, high-end home that you will not want to leave.

Rooms are spacious and the décor is trendy. Massive king-sized beds are fit for a king with their multitude of pillows and soft sheets.

The space is well-equipped for a cozy stay. Want to watch a movie? There is a Bose wireless speaker you can hook up to your computer. How about a drink? The room features a nice selection of glassware to choose from and a large sofa you can relax on. Craving your daily dose of the news? There is a massive flat-screen TV affixed to the wall. And if you are having a long stay, the walk-in closet becomes very handy, providing plenty of space to spread out your clothes and see everything at a glance.

The bathroom is another lovely space where modernity meets class. Bulgari toiletries are a welcome sight for fashion and beauty-forward crowd. Two stone sinks are a lovely interior touch, as is a huge bathtub that is perfect for taking a long bath. Otherwise, there is always a rain shower cabin that you can opt for. The bathroom also features Japanese Toto toilets/bidets that add an element of amusement to the whole experience.

The property provides complimentary breakfast on each floor, 24 hours a day. There is unlimited Nespresso coffee, a wide selection of juices and yoghurts, fruit and cereal. In addition, there is a fitness centre and business centre on-site.

And, now onto the most exciting part, the Mixologists at the bar downstairs know how to make a mean cocktail. They are well-known in the city for adding creative twists on classic drinks, or inventing their own concoctions. Either way, each drink is bound to have a funky name.

Oh Gosh, I’m Posh; Corpse Depriver; The French Carol; and S’nantny are just some of the things you will find on the menu here. During the day, there are always guests at the bar, but all the fun starts later in the evening, as the Luxus becomes a hot party spot, filled with a fun-loving and extremely friendly crowd. No matter how wild the party gets, you won’t hear a thing once you head back to your room. So, you can join for as long as you like, and then retreat back for a restful break for the night.

No matter what you end up doing on your St. John’s itinerary, the Luxus is the ultimate choice for a relaxing, luxurious and very trendy stay in Newfoundland and Labrador’s capital!
