For New Yorkers and globe-trotting beach lovers alike, summer and early fall are best spent in the Hamptons. But those in the know will tell you that fall in the East End is just as good, and maybe even better.

A mass-exodus takes place after Labour Day that frees top restaurants, bars, shops and the beach. Wineries are finally in their prime with the best of the best, ready to drink in the cooler months. Above all, rooms in the finest hotels and B&Bs open up … but not for long, when people are reminded of Indian Summers and the beauty of a cooler breeze in the small beautiful Hampton towns.

The hardest decision by far when planning such a weekend escape is choosing which town to explore. The answer, by the way, is all of them. The essential element is to pick the best home base: one that easily connects you to the other towns, one that’s close to delicious eateries, one that’s close to the best beaches and wineries. That town is East Hampton.

Nestled between downtown and the pristine beach is the quirky hotel-quality B&B, c/o The Maidstone, right on Main Street.

Constructed just before the U.S. Civil War, the Greek Revival was bought in 2008 by Swedish hotelier Jenny Ljungberg and re-designed in an eclectic mix of Scandinavian and New York style. More than a dozen rooms and three cottages were designed to celebrate some of the most inspiring Scandinavian personalities.

The inn, meant to emulate your own home, is adorned by owner Jenny’s personal art collection, her own tea line, complimentary bikes, Yappy Hour (yes, that’s puppy happy hour!), a terrace and fall-perfect fireplace to envy, as well as  a book collection nestled in what they call “The Cozy” – a large but warm space to enjoy whatever you’d do in the coziest nooks of your dream house.

A place like this naturally draws an interesting crowd.

“The types of people we get are usually in the creative business, whether that’s fashion, photography or the literary crowd,” says general manager Tara Rothberg, whose personal passion is to support local women’s businesses.

When hunger strikes, guests have the benefit of having one of East Hampton’s best fine dining restaurants on the ground floor – The Living Room, which visitors flock to from the many other East End towns nearby.

Young chef David Armone is looking to attract the diner who can put full trust in him and opt for the Scandi-American five-course meal. He admits his dishes are a bit more experimental and risky in the fall. “In the summer you eat, in the fall you dine,” adds Rothberg.
