It’s fashion-week season, and here are the top shows that we particularly enjoyed during the latest Toronto Fashion Week.

You can read more about Canadian fashion in my latest Editor’s Letter but, in the meantime, let’s take a look at the list of designers who greatly impressed us earlier this month.

Hilary MacMillan

Hilary MacMillan presented her strongest collection to-date. She had a very cohesive, elegant and feminine runway show that featured highly wearable, yet trendy and sophisticated clothing. A particular highlight were her patent trenches and signature plaid designs.

Mani Jassal

Mani Jassal‘s latest show featured the best fabrics and styling at TFW: every single detail in each piece sent down the runway was thorough and thoughtful. From hairstyling, to statement jewelry and gorgeous silk braided into each model’s hair (to match the clothing they wore), this was a well-executed production that is rare. Often, designers are too caught up in the design component to pay attention to small details, but details make all the difference. Bravo to Jassal and her entire team on doing this so well.

Narces

Narces is always one of the most anticipated shows at TFW. We’ve worked with designer Nikki Wirthensohn Yassemi on various editorial shoots over the years, and she produces some of the best dresses in the Canadian fashion industry. Her latest collection was also her best to-date and we particularly enjoyed the opening and closing pieces that she paired with hats by Canadian celebrity milliner David Dunkley.

The closing piece was an absolute stunner combination of white and grey, and we loved it so much that we are running it as our cover image this month.

Christopher Bates

Our final pick is the runway show of Christopher Bates, whose work we have supported since his early beginnings as a designer. Bates flew all the way from Milan, where he is based now, to close TFW with his latest menswear collection. It was trendy, wearable, masculine, sexy and very sophisticated.

All of these shows happened to take place on the last day of TFW. Although highly chaotic at the beginning of the week, the last day was well-executed and beautifully presented, with shows taking place at the Royal Ontario Museum, which was a stunning backdrop for the runway.

The sponsors this season included Hazelton Hotel, FIJI water, Yorkville Village, Redken and the BeautyBoutique, among others. Canadian fashion needs support like this, as it makes events like TFW happen and grow. As always, we look forward to the next season and the runway presentations later this year.
