#TBT: Caulfield Cup Carnival 2018

December 13, 2018

Every year, the first day of the Caulfield Cup Carnival, called Guineas Day, signifies not only the beginning of the Spring Racing Carnival in Melbourne, but also the summer.

Somehow, the infamous and unpredictable Melbourne weather always rises to the occasion. This year’s event was no exception—it was the first hot day of the season and guests took every opportunity to enjoy the sunshine.

Local Instagram celebrities, wives and girlfriends of footy players, and ex Bachelor / Bachelorette winners could all be found at the VIP marquees inside the Heath Enclosure. Olympia Valance made a particularly striking image in a low-cut white pant suit accessorized with a black hat with gold chains that cascaded down the brim like rainfall. Inside the Moët & Chandon Lawn, guests enjoyed champagne that flowed from a white and gold Italian champagne van, as well as an uninterrupted view of the race track.

Twice a day everyone took a few moments from the races to watch the David Jones runway. The high-end department store showed this season’s trends for the spring racing season. Tailored pant suits and ultra-feminine silk dresses dominated the runway. However, the standout theme was bright colour: think fuchsia, yellow, green and red. Nearly every look was bold and saturated in colour.

Whether you looked on or off the runway, you could not help but notice this season’s huge popularity in the designs of Rebecca Vallance. Feminine and vibrant, they could be seen in all of this season’s favorite colours, nearly always with an oversized bow on one shoulder. The notable mention, however, goes to Acler for the Fincher skirt and top. This popular set was worn by the top fashion influencers in citrus, empire blue, and grey and white stripes.

Inside the main tent, ladies were invited to have their hair and makeup touched up, and then pose for professional photos. This was a popular past time as the line never stopped growing throughout the day. For a more creative experience, one could also be drawn by a professional fashion illustrator courtesy of Catalina Sounds wine.

Once again, the Caulfield Cup Carnival proved to be one of the events of the season, with incredible weather and an opportunity to observe the best in local fashion and upcoming trends. FAJO will be back next time for sure!
