This designer has the IT factor. Edgy, creative and not afraid to experiment, she has what it takes to be really competitive and make her work stand out.
Lew Kee’s designs have been displayed at Holt Renfrew’s annual showcase of selected Ryerson graduates. She has also dressed Shenae Grimes of 90210 for the 2010 MMVA’s, was the muse and created a wardrobe for Fritz Helder’s music video, and was featured in the Toronto Star as one of 2010’s best dressed people.
Lew Kee’s spring 2011 collection was very well-received at the LG Fashion Week. Her show had, perhaps, the most unique opening. It started with a screening of a video of a model, whose image kept splitting into two halves and who kept shaking her head from side to side, while her clothes were changing. Once the video was over, the lights went up and the models started to parade down the catwalk.
Lew Kee used soft fabrics and completely neutral, pastel colours. All models wore stiletto ankle-high champagne-toned boots.
Most of her work centred on dresses. They ranged from very loose to very tight-fitting, but the cut made them look like they were flowing and barely touched the models’ bodies.
Lew Kee played with chiffon, metallic fringes, sheer fabrics and accentuated zippers. Some of her styles clearly reminded us of Michael Kors’ signature muted camel colour. She also showcased muted greys and pinks.
All models had a bright blue lipstick that strongly contrasted with their outfits and pale make-up. Lew Kee, herself, showed up with her lips painted blue at the end of the show.
Only 21, Lew Kee has a bright future, and the fashion world will await to see what she has to offer in the years to come.
