Charise Bauman, a Toronto-based hairstylist, put together looks for this FAJO photoshoot, titled Subtle Reminisce. Afterwards, she shared details on her inspirations that were reflected in this project.

Subtle Reminisce was inspired by softness and classical music. The result is an Edwardian-style series that relies solely on the hair and textures from everyday objects. The series stands out due to the lack of jewelry or clothing — instead, the focus is on a minimalist style and storytelling through statuesque poses.

“I find huge inspiration in faces, textures and silhouettes,” says Bauman. “When I look at the silhouette of the model’s body, combined with the texture of her hair and features, the original concept becomes a guideline and all my ideas come to life. I try to envision the shapes, forms and textures onto the hair.”

Each creation requires patience and can be challenging to bring to life. “I like working with my hands, and working on a ‘live canvas’,” she explains.

Bauman’s role model is Peter Gray: “He encourages imperfections to be beautiful, allowing hair to move and be imperfect in the time when hair was meant to be perfect. His creations are so technically well done that they just work. He brings fashion to life in a realistic way, and knows how to make you feel like you are part of the story through hair, which is a weird concept!”
