Polo, PIMMS and sunshine: finals’ day at Chestertons Polo in the Park

For the second year in a row, I attended the annual Polo in the Park event in Fulham, London, U.K. Now in its sixth consecutive year, Chestertons Polo in the Park is one of the most anticipated and successful outdoor summer events in the British sporting and social calendar.
The world’s top polo ponies and players, from countries such as Australia, Argentina and China, participate in exciting and competitive matches. I attended a fun, action-packed family day on the finals’ day where polo players from London, Abu Dhabi, Beijing, Buenos Aires, Lagos and Sydney competed for the trophy.
In addition to the on-field action, there was plenty of off-field entertainment, including fun games, a Club Med Kids zone, street food, drinks and luxury shops, selling everything from hats, jewelry, art and leather goods, to real estate.
Upon entering, my Canadian attendees and I headed straight for the PIMMS bus — nothing accompanies British sunshine better than a refreshing pitcher of PIMMS (a type of gin-based alcohol), lemonade and fruit — served from an iconic double-decker. If PIMMS isn’t for you, there were also pints from a proper British pub, called Crown & Corgi, bubbly from the fancy Pommery Champagne Garden or tropical-themed cocktails at the popular Mahiki Tent.
Of course, one of my favourite parts of these quintessentially English events is seeing what everyone wears. The sun was shining, and the temperature was in the mid-20s, so skin and sunnies were out. It was mainly bright trousers in red, pink, blue and green for the boys and summer dresses for the girls. I went around the Mahiki Tent snapping street-style moments of some of the favourite looks that caught my eye, captured in the photo gallery above.
Although distracted by people-watching, catching up with friends and checking out the best looks (it is just as much about glamourous socializing and luxurious hospitality as it is about sports), I did actually manage to watch some of the polo matches. Congrats to Abu Dhabi, who took this year’s Chestertons Polo in the Park title, defeating Lagos 11 to 5!
